Installing XP by USB Boot

How exactly is it done?

I boot up the laptop from the USB drive and the XP installation stuff begins... but soon as it needs to reboot, it reboots and I end up going round in circles.

What a load of b*ll*cks.

Remove the USB stick, like you would the DVD. Or change the boot order so that your hard drive is first.

But if I remove the USB it can't install. I'm on about the reboot it does after copying set up files not after XP has actually installed.

Long time since I installed XP. However I'm pretty sure you should remove the installation media before it reboots. Change the boot order in the BIOS to hard drive first. Then when XP has installed it will boot to it instead of USB again.

Don't remove the USB key. Tell the system to boot from HDD after the first reboot.

^This. Once copied from the USB, the PC now needs to boot from the HDD.

Xp is now very old and patchy, consider something more modern as you are freshing installing anyway.

It's for a 10" netbook and Windows 7 task bar and stuff takes up too much screen real estate. If it wasn't for certain programs I use I would have just used Linux on it.
