hi folks,
just trying to install yellowdog on ps3,but I'm having a problem with screen res when install starts.
I've got as far as putting the install disc in, but after the command promt when install begins,it seems as if the screen res is wrong(garbled picture).
I'm linked to tv via hdmi with screen res set to auto on ps3.My tv is a hitachi 42PD7200 which supports up to 1080i res.
anyone give me a clue what I'm doing wrong.
I'm a total noob to linux so please make it as simple as possible.
thanks in advance

ok , I think i've sussed it!
Ive connected to tv using the composite lead supplied with the ps3, and this seems to be working. I'm installing at the moment, will post back later to let you know how I did(using keyboard with fingers crossed whilst praying not easy lol)

Hi this may help..

you'll want to get out of that nasty 480i resolution...

The crucial command here is one called "ps3videomode". Basically, this is a custom command that sets the mode on the PS3. If you're hooked up using a component cable, the commands are as follows:

ps3videomode -v [number]

Replace [number] with 2 for 480p, 3 for 720p, 4 for 1080i and 5 for 1080p. Alternatively, if you're using RGB rather than YUV component video, use 34 for 480p, 35 for 720p, 36 for 1080i and 37 for 1080p. Those are all for 60Hz displays - there is a different set of numbers for 50Hz displays. A full set of the numbers is available in the documentation on Sony's site.

If you're using a HDMI cable, you have the option of using VESA resolutions, like those used by PCs. For WXGA, use 11; for SXGA, use 12; and for WUXGA, the highest resolution supported by the console, use 13. However, a quick word of warning - my own experimentation with the console suggests that when running Linux, the PS3 insists on outputting HDCP signals, which basically means that the signal is copy-protected and will only work on monitors that support HDCP. The more recent Dell 2407 monitor supports HDCP on the DVI port, for example, so you can plug in a HDMI to DVI cable and it'll work - the older Dell 2405 doesn't, and nor do the majority of computer monitors.

**EDIT**

Just seen rp2000,s post as my quote comes from that site. Im 65% installed this now so far going well

Ok, managed to load yellowdog, but now when I boot to it I have the same problem.
after the command prompt, the picture is garbled as if the res or refresh rate is incorrect.
tried setting the ps3videomode3(and several other settings)but still the same problem. tried hdmi and composite leads but not getting anywhere.
any suggestions?

update.
right then(sighs heavily) I've managed to get a little further.
I found that if I use tab at command prompt(kboot),and scroll through the options I get a 1080i option which allows me to boot. yeayyy
Next problem(there had to be one!!).At login,I can type in login, but when I try to type in password, nothing happens. no matter what I type in the screen curser just sits blinking.
helpppppp!

you sure it's not actually typing in the password "behind the scenes"?

A lot of operating systems do that so no one can tell the length of your password.

wouldn't it show asterisk or something?
I typed in the password, pressed enter, but it said incorrect login

The install instructions say type root for login. Does this literally mean root, or do I type in the root drive? If so what would I need to type in for login?
Don't forget I'm a totall noob to linux :)

Root for your Login name then ya password

ok, I've sorted the login /password.
Now I can't get into the gui/desktop!!
I type in startx , but the screen just stays blank.
the instructions with ydl are a little hard to follow(probably because I'm a linux noob)
I'm probably missing something really simple.
anyone??

on the login screen is there not a tab that you select that gives a list of the different sessions ( gnome, enlightenment etc ), when I installed ydl, I logged in and selected the gnome session and the desktop came up, the only time I see lines of text is when I first boot up or when I shut down, where did you get your distro from?

no errors. when I login, I get:
[root@localhost ~]#
then I type in startx and it just goes to blank screen
A mate gave me the disc, not sure where from. I'll try and find out

Hi mate

Mine installed fine i downloaded it from the net to a DVD Boot disc iv since uninstalled tho as it does not support my Wireless router:/ ill glady send you my copy if you cant get no joy out of that , You will need the Add on CD and the file from the sony sight tho.

I'm not sure if this means anything, but when I installed, I had to install in text(low res) mode because the screen was all garbled if not.
now when I try to boot, at the kboot it gives me the option of 480i or 1080i.
choosing either of these, lets me into login screen, then I enter user and password which brings up:
[root@localhost ~]#
At this point if I type startx the screen goes blank
If I type:gnome, I get command not found error
If I type in:gnome-mount, I get x display not available-using text based operation
I'm thinking its some kind of res problem, but I can't seem to work out where or how to set the scrren res.
