Googles one seems a little dated with the UI....can anyone recommend something nicer?

Looks like its ad supported...not something I want. I don't want to pay for this sort of simple software either.

Trillian is awesome. Very versatile, can connect to Skype, Hotmail, GTalk and checks emails too.

Not sure what the ad status is... I never see any but I vaguely remember paying for it at some point. Try Pidgin.

Pidgin is GTK if I recall correctly...prefer something native.
