Just re-installed one of the PCs, finally sticking it on Windows 7.

I've noticed in the Windows System even log at boot it always logs a warning of "Event 6146, amdkmdag: Insufficient power to operate graphics card at standard settings.". Annoyingly I can't see which of the two 4870X2s it's means!

Any ideas what that's on about? And how do I fix it? I've tried the graphics cards without Overdrive and it still reports it just the same :(.

Time to crank up the PSU somehow I guess! :p

System Specs are:
  • HIS ATI Radeon HD 4870X2 2048MB
  • HIS ATI Radeon HD 4870X2 2048MB
  • Intel Q9550
  • Asus Rampage Formula X48
  • 4GB XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500
  • Corsair HX 1000W PSU
  • Windows 7 64bit (fully up-to date)
  • Catalyst Control Centre 10.8 (the latest as per my installation on monday)

If it makes any difference, the cards aren't running in Crossfire as I need to use all four DVI ports.

Cheers,
Ed.

Can you get a PSU tester and check the PSU for any faults, they are cheap to pick up on a famous auction site.

Edit: Sorry for the quote no need really as im the 1st poster:rolleyes:

Stupid question: Are all the 12v power cables connected . . . .

Real question: Check the cables are delivering 12v. Get a multimeter and physically check every plug.

I assume all the power cables are also connected to the Rampage, I believe it has more than just ATX and P8? Or am I thinking of a different board?

Dodgy PSU being a likely cause isn't what I wanted to hear :(. Paid £183.99 for it! :(

Just installed GPU-Z and had a look:

Current looks low on card 2. Annoying how I've only found this by going through the Windows logs. Overdrive Autotune ran fine and didn't mention anything!

Powersupply still the probable cause? Or is there anything else it could be?

Are you running bothy cards on the same rail? My old HX520 struggled with a single 4870X2, they don't half need some power!

I see the power supply is a dual rail monster, are the cards running on the same rail, as this maybe the cause as each rail can only supply 40amp on the 12v line?

i've just sent off a corsair hx1000 for rma due to it dying, so i wouldn't be surprised if it's on its last legs tbh... for all the praise they get, this is the 1st psu i've ever had die on me

Yes, because things never go wrong unless everyone they've ever built goes wrong too.....

Using http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=70317 I've put one of the cards onto rail 1 and one card onto rail 2. Also whilst there I made sure that both cards had their 6 pin and 6+2 pin firmly connected (to me the 2 look like they could easily be knocked out!).

No more error messages on boot :D, and all four GPU-Z screens using 12.2A on idle @ 507MHz GPU and 500MHz GDDR.
When running the Windows experience index one of the four GPU-Z screens shows the core loading upto 100% and current go to 28A.
Voltages and currents on the other three (which aren't touched in Windows experience index) remain at 1.0625V 12.2A.

I don't think I'm gonna Overdrive either of them, I'll leave them on stock.

lol

i'm just saying from experience, in my case it hasn't been a good experience...

not saying they're all crap, just that it's the 1st psu i've come across that hasn't worked :p

no need to get your panties in a twist ;)

They're overpiced as well and not all that great.
Corsair made great move with the first HX series when they were great PSUs for good price but then they got all greedy and using the fame that they've made with those, increased prices by LOTS.

Too bad most people didn't realise this and still state them as the best PSUs on the market.

They're good, but they're not best, and for the prices they currently have, I'll never recommend one.

I also recommend Corsair for there service as well, not just the product. You do have to send it internationally however if something did go wrong, only downside :(

I wouldn't say overpriced, just not as cheap as the competition. Those quality parts don't come cheap :( However, some of the products seem to be hit and miss now, definately worth reading the reviews on each model before purchase, not all psu's in the range are the same.

Also, never noticed the current (Amps) draw in on gpuz. Will check that out on my system!

Not sure about service, I've only had ever to RMA only one PSU and that was due to motherboard that killed it.

Thermaltake, not sure where ocUK had to send this one but I got a brand new replacement in less than 10days so can't complain really.

Most of the 70quid+ PSUs are top quality now anyways so I wouldn't spend a penny more than I have on branding unless you want to run tri sli 480 then obviously you best you can get to keep the amps up but for normal setups you can probably grab an OCZ and it will be fine.

I myself very much like the Thermaltake Toughpower series, good price and excellent PSUs.

I'd also recommend the new sapphires and coolermaster usually over the corsair and if you want to spend the extra then seasonic.

well, i'll vouch for their service, rma'd on the 6th, received back today.

i'm banking on this one being fine, but all the corsair fanbois just relax, we're not digging :)
