Insurance and not willing to cover new car question

This reminds me of when my dad bought a G-reg Ford Orion 1.6i, must've been the late 80s, and his current insurer refused to cover him.

Apparently, the "i" for injection meant they classed it as a sports car!

He was in his early forties at the time....

Well, tbf the 1.6i Orion was basically an XR3i with a boot.

Rang swift cover to cancel the policy and told them I wanted to cancel due to them not be willing to cover me on an MX5, he took the reg to double check and they waived the cancellation fee for me

Very pleased to hear this.

I was with swiftcover about 18 months ago and i was in the same spot. I had a new car and they wouldn't insure the new one, i couldnt even find a number for them so i just canceled.

I really couldn't understand it as there wasnt much difference in power and pretty much any other insurer would give me a pretty reasonable quote. I was 24 insuring a Jaguar XJ8 and i was trying to switch the policy to an N/A supra. i ended up insuring it with SKY. Insurance can just one of those inflexible things making life more difficult.

More or less identical situation then. I couldn't cancel online had to ring them up. Ended up insuring the MX5 with brentacre

Net cost in changing from a 1.6 Ford Escort Estate to a 1.8 MX5 was nothing, theres also no additional charge on mods unless I increase the power too.

One question, is it an import? I had similar trouble with Swiftcover and buying an MX5 for my then wife.

Problem wasn't the MX5, it was because it was an import and well at least at that time they didn't cover them.

UK model. I've got the Certificate of registration and the original invoice from the Mazda dealer from 1998.

I highly doubt Swiftcover would have been anywhere near the £589 I paid with brentacre

When my 1.4 litre Almera (deathly dull but so reliable. It NEVER broke) was written off by someone pulling out in front of me I was with Swiftcover. They refused to insure me on the replacement, a 306 GTI-6. Have been with Direct Line ever since.

It must be your postcode then.

Would be my guess too.

Avoid Adrian Flux, I was told they were cack if you needed to claim and ignored it. they were a proper **** about and when I got the paperwork it simply wasn't the insurance I had agreed to. They then tried to charge me a cancellation fee before the insurance had even started!

Went with green light in the end, the chaps on the phone even seemed knowledgeable not he usual call centre insurance monkeys.

Good for mods too as they don't charge to add them ;) SO if you do get tempted to mod then yer safe :)

It appears so haha

so who's ya going with this year OP? :p

Renewed with Greenlight in December.

All mods declared (MegaSquirt ECU, Big brake kit, wheels+ anything else upto 180bhp) for £400, they want a grand total of £50 extra to increase the power limit to 250bhp once I finally get the turbo fitted

Dealt with Neil who is their MX5 guy, deals with all the MX5Nutz forum customers and is an ex-5 owner himself

Did you remember to select hairdresser as job title....only jk :D

I had trouble with my insurer whilst trying to swap my car, they wanted to charge me £900 when the online quote was £420 as they couldn't price match an existing policy with a new quote. They said I had to cancel the policy, which was only 4 weeks old at a price of £70 and open a new one. I spent hours on the phone with them, you're best bet if you want to stay with Swiftcover is to get other quotes online, get put through to cancellations and be very forceful with what you want. Don't be impolite but play the long term customer card and see what they can do. For me they cancelled the policy, as it was literally the only way they could price match (stupid I know) but they refunded the cancellations fee, which they don't normally do, although I suspect someone got a slap off their boss for doing it :D

Insurance is just one big scam! They are all out to screw anyone at any little chance they get with stupid admin charges etc.
When my insurance was due last month none of the brokers or supposed performance speacialist brokers would cover Me on my ST with 6 yrs no claims and a clean licence
