Looking for a bit of advice really.

I have declared my annual mileage with my insurance 15,000 miles per year which is about right , but until recently due to changing jobs , which lowered my weekly mileage quite considerably , from 300 - 330 miles per week to about 30 - 65 miles per week. (3,000 miles per year approx.)

Question is , should i advise my insurance company of the mileage change ? If i do i will say 4,000 miles per year just to cover, just in case

Apart from the obligatory charge for a change in policy. Is it worth it ?

Thanks in advance.

You'll probably find there's very little difference in price.

It's only an estimation, anyway, unless you have a specific Limited Mileage policy.

If it's still lower when your renewal comes, just amend it then.

I have only renewed my insurance 2 months ago with LV , i dont think i have a specific limited mileage. I will amend when i renew it next year.

It's worth informing them. Higher mileage = more opportunities to be in an accident. You might get it cheaper.

Or on the flip side lower mileage means you don't drive as much and so might be considered not as good a driver and so the insurance increases - or this could be codswallop.

Agreed, there is a sweet spot to aim for. 4000 is enough that you wouldn't forget how to drive though :p

most insurance companies as far as i know offer some sort of discount if you do under about 8k miles a year, i have to sign a low mileage form every year

and i guess the can prove you mileage??? as its printed on you previous mot certificate?

I've got my insurance set at 6,000 miles. I had the car new in June 2010 and I've only done 11,600 so I'm barely over 4,000 per year really but for how much I'd save, probably nothing, I just leave it as 6k. I use the car daily, it's just that work is about 3 miles and other places I visit are mostly quite close.

Ok prolly best to phone and ask.

Also what if your car doesn't have a MOT cert. I.e my car as it is under 3 years old , any other proof they can pull ? Apart from from stamped service book .

Your usage. If you work 50 miles away and drive there everyday claiming to do 5k a year isn't going to wash. They do look into usage patterns if the claim is big enough.

depends on your policy premium from my experience, when a policy is say £300 a year with 10k, reducing it you wont see much of a difference . but say if your policy if 800+ you might see a difference with that kind of change.

changing one thing on the policy normally has a knock on effect of some of the other rating factors.

If it's low then some insurers will ask you the current mileage of the car. But who's to say your friend hasn't been driving it doc on their policy? There's no way of them proving it.

Unless your insurance policy starts on exactly the same day as your MOT, it's completely useless as a measure. There is also the possibility other drivers are using the car via another insurance policy or drive any car extensions.
