Hi guys,

A collegue at work was wondering if insurance coveres somene keying the side of a car? He can't speak to the insurance company until later so said i'd try get some advise.

Thanks guys,

Mal

I think they cover everything but you would have to pay the excess which puts people off making small claims.
Probably cheaper than excess to get it resprayed yourself, and keep no-claims.

What car is it?

If it's an old, cheap one then you can sometimes replace the doors etc... from a scrapped vehicle for not very much.

Otherwise I think in the long run it may be cheaper not to claim.

Tis a 2001 black 5door focus.

How much would he be looking at to get it sorted, ish?

I'd expect a couple of hundred £ to get a side resprayed. It'll be cheaper than most because it's a standard colour and not a metallic. Probably best to do it off the insurance but still worth asking them anyway. He might only have a £50 excess and it might only affect next years quote by £25.

Depending on the paint colour and finish i.e. metalic the paint could cost about £90 per litre for good quality paint like ICI. Although if its just got a scratch on it the preparation time would be minimal. The only real problem with getting bodywork done is finding a company that actually do a proper job.

Just how deep is the scratch? A photo would be handy.

I know of a few guys who do this kind of work, my supra was scratched by the garage supports/sides and they did a fantastic job despite the colour being black.
