Insurance headache

Called my insurer to get my policy changed from my Aprilia RSV1000 Factory on to my Triumph Tiger 1050, only to be told that the underwriter won't cover the Triumph due to it's insurance group! Because of this, I can't change the bike on my policy. I need to cancel the old one and take out a new one.

The Aprilia is group 16 or 17 depending on who's insuring
The Tiger is group 13 or 14 depending on who's insuring

How stupid is that?

I currently pay £490 to insure the Aprilia. Bennetts was £290 for the Triumph.

This means I have to effectively pay to cancel my old policy because you never get back the full amount of the unused term, and then pay again to take out a new one.

I mean, I could understand it if I was changing bikes to a Ducati 1098R or something equally exotic, but I'm downgrading to a lower group bike.

Its a complete lottery mate, no quote i have ever had has been predictable or has made much sense. Just the way it is :(

You got it wrong mate. It's their perogative to cancel the insurance as they dont accept the bike you've bought. The cancellation will be Pro Rata, so you will get back everything that remains for the year (you will pay only for the days you've been on cover so far).

As far as not insuring lower grouping, some insurers specialise in high premium, high risk policies, and don't want the low risk low premium stuff. it works both ways.

you're not out of pocket :) (although it IS a pain to get new insurance).

A non-fault accident adds £400 to my other halfs policy with most companies, really fustrating but that's how they work.

They probably won't deal with anything but sports bikes or something stupid, to keep their overheads down and quotes competative.

You might find that as a new customer you wouldn't get insured on the Aprilia either. I've heard similar things where insurers have changed their policy but continue to insure current customers until they go to make a change to their policy.

Greenlight and their policy on not covering vRS Skodas springs to mind where no new customers could get a quote but those already insured with them were sent quotes at renewal.

Sorted. Refund from my existing insurers and a nice £280/year policy from Bennetts.
Shame it had to be such a hassle.

I like these all-rounder bikes. I've not paid that little for bike insurance since about 1992.
