what's your views on this

ok, i was insured on my dads car as a second driver, i paid my share of the insurance for this last year.

I had the car one night and someone crashed into it while it was parked (hit and run, i wasn't present).
we put the car through the insurance and I paid the excess fees.

i've decided i wont renew the insurance this year.
the insurance has now gone up due to the accident.

should i be paying for this increase even though i won't be insured or using the car now?

it was an unfortunate accident but i don't want to keep paying for it
my dad says he shouldn't be paying the increase

i take it the person who crashed into the car didnt leave details to claim against?

You shouldnt need to pay more because of it if you are no longer on the policy. However, a nominal payment towards it would be nice as the car was with you (as much as you werent in the car).

Mmmm, this is a tough one. On one hand the car was in your care when it was damaged, although I understand it wasn't your fault. On the other, it's certainly not your fathers fault.

In the end though I'd say it's unfair to leave your father paying a higher premium for something he had nothing to do with so making some kind of contribution would be fair.
