Hi all,

I'm not sure what the correct terminology for insurance policies that use 'black box' or other recording devices, maybe someone can help? However, what I would like to know is peoples opinion about this sort of set-up. It is claimed that it can save money on policies with one fitted, has anyone gone down this route and saved money?

I'm rather concerned that insurance companies can use this data to increase premiums and have 'evidence' to back it up - I'm sure my interpretation of someones driving habits (for example: Mr. Myself) will be different to another (for example: Mr. Insurance Investigator)

I'm looking into this for the benefit of my daughter, now 22 years of age and still pays silly insurance premiums in my opinion.

Any thoughts about this.

Regards
Scotty

What times of day does she drive? Does she do many miles? If she only uses her car to pop to the shops, and not cruise around late at night, a box would help. Its all about calculating risk.

How much does she pay? Ive paid £530 for a year fully comp with elephant, not that it has much relevance

Had mine for a fair few months now and it's no bother, infact i even saved money (every 90 days i get sent £130-£160 for the duration of the policy)

as long as you don't drive like an idiot it's nothing to worry about.

She has a 1 year old daughter (I'm too young to be a grandad!) and so it's mainly pottering to family and friends in the day, she does drive very sensibly and has a 1.2 Clio. I estimate less than 6000 miles per year. Just paid £1485 with no points or endorsements.

Edit - and held license for ~3 years although didn't drive the whole time so i think she has 2 year no claims (gets no bonus yet anyway)

Depends how much it would save you, would be interesting to run a quote with and without. If my premiums were very high I would consider it but I only pay £500 a year fully comp on my S70. For me it would have to be a £200+ reduction to think about it, depending on what data they actually saved/used.

She lives in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. I too think its a stupid high price but she did go through all the various price comparison sites, a few days before needing the cover...

I myself renewed recently and got it cheaper than last year when I searched the month before - when I searched again a few days before renewal was due, the quotes were much higher (thankfully I kept the quote and rang the insurer to make sure there wasn't going to be any surprises later) Perhaps there is something to be learned in getting quotes earlier, I'm sure the insurers can use this information to their advantage.

I suspect she'd benefit from a few of the tricks like adding parents as named drivers, even if you're never likely to drive the car.

She really shouldn't need one of these black box things to get decent quotes at 22.

Her mum does drive the car now and then and is a named driver but doesn't use her 9 yrs no claims as that goes on her own car.
Its such a ripoff these days and we all have heard the reason why in recent months.

Is it just her postcode thats ramping up the cost?

Try going on a comparison website and doing all of her details but with your postcode for example, see what the outcome is. If it is the postcode then im affriad theres little you can do unfortunately.
