Insurance prices = WOW :|

If you are looking to save money rather than just change car because you want t, then wait for the 1/2 way point in the Clio contract.

If you really want to change car then get a small Peugeot 106 or something have that for a year and build up a NCB, this will work out cheaper than buying an Alfa and insuring it.

However if you want to get the Alfa regardless of cost you will have to stump up the cash, but it won't be cheap to run.

Anyway look at options/costs and see what you want to do?

Thats one hell of an excess. What was the knock? Did you have to pay your excess?

Last January when it had snowed I drove down the A3 to Portsmouth and a chunk of ice came off a lorry I was following on a slip road, went under my car and next thing I know the car is spinning and I'm playing pinball with the barriers.

£1600 to get it fully sorted so didn't go through insurance.

I didn't know this, if I had a Bsc how exactly would I go on to become an EE for example?

The same way you would if you had a BEng I assume.

An institution like the IMechE isn't going to refuse you membership because you happen to have a BSc in Mech Eng rather than a BEng.

What MEng degree do you have ?

You don't need an MEng specifically, BEng, MSc, BSc... all would be acceptable engineering degrees :p

LOL, owned #!;#;;#1!1111 :D:D:D

Seems like a manic price, but then again Bradford does seem to be classed in the same group as Basra.

Keep trying and also play with profession, and wbeing picky you arn't really an engineer :p

The usual route from BEng is to IEng, but you can get a CEng but it involves extra work/experiece etc. Not particularly hard to get a CEng once you have got your MEng and have cracked on with your working life.

I insured a group 9 car at 21 with no NCB for around 1.3k and that was just a few months ago. And I was a student in Essex, you sure you're doing everything right?

I was looking at some alfa 147s tonight, now i coule get one for roughly 1500 in good nick and insurance would be anywhere between 3400 and 4k if i put 2k down on the insurance too it would make monthly repayments smaller.

Do not buy an Alfa 147 for £1500, unless you're comfortable that you can fix things on it yourself.

Don't buy an Alfa 147, especially one for 1500, they are crap.

They are good cars and offer a good alternative to something like an A3 for less money. They're not particularly unreliable, but it is important like any car that it is well maintained. The main problem is that despite being good value for money, when something does inevitable go wrong (as with any car) the work is more expensive, the parts are typically much more expensive than the Focus or the Fiesta that you were looking at for similar money.

If you are using price comparison sites you deserve to pay those silly amounts. Call the big companies like Admiral, Bell, Chruchill, Aviva directly and get a genuine quote.

Nobody should be paying more than £1500 for fully comp insurance under 25 for a half decent car.

Geeez, you kids nowadays! I recall insuring my first car (bright orange 1.0l Metro City) for £70.......

:D

Just doing a quick check with direct line, for a 1.25 '96 Fiesta for a 21yr old student/skilled worker in my street (an F area in Leeds on the insurance database) comes out at £1.7k for fully comp or £1.9k TPFT

Insurance has risen. And lol @ Bradford. OP try Bell/Admiral/Elephant, and put 2 women over age of 50, and 15years driving experience as named drivers, and watch the price drop. That's what I was told from people on here to do and it's gone down £1400 for me.

EDIT: And don't buy an Alfa. Get something Japanese, Suzuki/Toyota/Mitsubishi, Honda's are generally expensive on insurance.

The thing is i need to buy a car which will last a few years and hopefully not costy me too much in repairs as when i start paying insurance i wont be having much money to spare for savings.

Hense finding this nice alfa

Dude, you ALWAYS deliver. :D

You learn from past mistakes, then go and make all new ones.

Mine was a Golf, so old that I doubt anyone knew exactly what model it was. Alfa at 21. Even at 30 with an income 3-4 times the size of the OP would I be able to swallow Alfa repair/parts costs from the dealer, without feeling bile of resentment threatening to explode from my gullet.

When I first started reading Motors I thought that it was a bit of a harsh forum and could understand why threads popped up about it being overly brutal to people if they didn't want to drive a Mondeo or a 530i. Now I completely understand why it's harsh, because it needs to be to try and help stop people from haemorrhaging money.

Don't buy an Alfa for 1500 quid, get something smaller, cheaper and more reliable until you're in a better financial state. You've just lost god knows how much money on a finance deal for a mk2 bog standard clio.

Living in Bradford as Vita has found out is bad for insurance (although this impact would have been lessened if he'd gone for a less spec'd Yaris instead of pretty much the top of the range MK1). Therefore go for a car with a low insurance group that wont make you gouge your eyes out whilst driving it. Also, dont pay for any of your insurance in monthly installments, you'll be chucking even more money away.

There's a reason why young people drive around in crap cars. INSURANCE.

Also I don't get this "Try an unsual car for a 20 year old to own, you might be suprised by the low cost of the insurance quote". I've never experienced this. My quotes from Admiral always scaled with insurance group not how unsual the car was.

Check http://www.thatcham.org/abigrouprating/index.jsp?page=343 for insurance groups

Are you looking on price comparison sites? I got these kind of outrageous quotes using them, but once I contacted insurers directly they were nearly half the price.

Lame. you expect to get insured on one of those cars at your age without paying a fortune?

Buy yoursef a 1.0L Corsa and spend a few years running around in that and dont smash it up then get cheap insurance

I never understand these young lads who want to buy a super duper car when they have had hardly any experience on the road.

It's down to £1000 now I'm 21, last year it was £1400, but how else could I legally insure a 7sec to 60 180bhp modded car at 19/20 for £450~!

I'm glad I did it, despite my knock :)

I have a £1000 excess on the Mondeo, but then that is just because that is cheaper than TPFT.
