Insurance Question/Problem

Hi everyone, I have a question/problem that I need help solving.

Here is my story (I'll try and keep it short and sweet haha)

I passed my bike test in May of this year and bought myself a YZF 600r. On the day of passing I was super excited to get out on the road so I rang up an insurance company for a quote. They asked if I had any recent convictions and I told them I hadn't. I opted for fully comp and off I went.

About a week ago my bike got stolen from outside of my house so I rang the police and rang up the insurance to notify them of what had happened. The next day I got a "theft interview" call from my insurance asking the usual questions, what time of day it happened..etc etc etc, and he then asked again if I had any recent motoring convictions to which again I told him no.

The day after that I got a letter asking for a copy of my license and paper license to which I noticed that I did in fact have a motoring conviction which was a 6 month ban from 2 years ago.

Now my question is this,

A) Will this automatically deem my claim void?

and B) If I do send them a copy of my paper license which shows I do infact have a conviction, will they bill me for more money as my original insurance payments would have been higher than what I have been paying since May?

I have accepted that I will not get any insurance claim money for my bike but I don't want to land myself further in the st by sending them my paper license which shows that I lied in the first place.

Thanks in advanced and apologies if this forum is strictly car related.

Andy

Depends if 2 years ago is classed as recent, probably is so..you might be in rough waters.

There is a dedicated biker forum at the top by the way, inside the motors forum.

Thanks MooMoo, to be honest I am open to suggestions from anyone who drives or rides as they will have a better understanding about insurance claims than me.

My main question really is do I even bother sending my documents off to my insurers? And if I did would it land me in more sh!t i.e owing them more money?

If this is the case then I will simply forget about the claim and move on.

You must have a serious motoring conviction to have been banned and 2 years is recent. A minor conviction over 3 years old and they may have given you an ap to bring the policy up to date and agreed to honour the claim, but in your case they'd be giving money away for nothing as there is a clear case of non disclosure.

How on earth do you "forget" you had a 6 month ban in the last 2 years!?

To answer the question, they will probably not pay out. They will probably also cancel your policy, which means next time you try to get insurance you have to tick the box that asks if you've ever had insurance cancelled, most likely putting your premiums up...

Regarding your other questions, they will only ask you for more money if they want to amend the policy and honour your claim. If they void your policy you should get a full refund on premiums paid because there is no third party claim to put the money towards.

You're not going to get done by the police or anything for not disclosing a conviction on your insurance but if voided you'll have to disclose this in future when asked and loads of insurers wont touch you, so if voided expect higher premiums forever as there will be way fewer insurers willing to cover you.

I wasn't aware the term "recent" was defined quite so measurably :p Seems a bit ambiguous if they indeed used that word over specifying a time period

Well, in insurance terms, recent usually means "within the last 5 years".

Regardless of which, if you weren't sure, wouldn't you query it?

A minor offence like an SP30 or so, fair enough, it might slip your mind, but something serious enough to get a ban for 6 months?

This tbh. There was no way that you'd "forget" you had a driving ban for 6 months, you were trying to defraud the insurance company.

No they will not pay out, and if you're really unlucky they will report you to the police for fraud (and rightly so).

[Edit] Post count of 2? Trololololll

Convictions are valid for 4 years and should be declared for 5 years

You sir are up to your neck in it this could go all the war to cancelled policies (guaranteed) to possible complaint of fraud (not so likely)

Regardless of what happens you will get nothing.

My advice contact insurance co cancel claim and hope they leave it at that. Consider yourself very luck that all you have lost is a bike in this case.

Yeah, I'd do this to be honest. Cancel the claim and cancel the policy. You'll lose the premiums you've paid so far for the time on cover, but at least that will be the end of it.

Consider it an expensive lesson on not to lie to your insurance company.
