Hi all

Cut a long story short my missus wrote our 2nd car off on Saturday after some chav chopped her up and drove off. Police etc got involved but couldn’t find the other car. Missus is fine just major front end damage to the car.

The police woman who was involved phoned last night to say our car is still registered as trade...checked the log book and she correct we only have the little slip and not received the main V5 (car purchased last September). She said she could have ceased the car of us.

The question is...insurance? Obviously I told them I was the registered owner but have now found out I am not?

Do you recon they(admiral) will still pay out?

Cheers

Andy

Most insurance requires the policy holder to be the registered keeper. If you stated you (or your missus) were the keeper when you started the policy and admiral discover you weren't I reckon you'll have a hard time getting anything out of them.

Where did you buy the car from and how long did you have it before the smash?

As far as I know it's actually quite difficult to have an insurance claim made totally invalid.
What the insurance company need to prove when saying they won't pay out is that the information you witheld was a direct cause of the claim.
So for example not mentioning a remap could get you in trouble.
Not mentioning a few "upgrades" could get you into the same issue.
However forgetting to re-register a car in your name really didn't contribute in any way to you having to make a claim.

Personally I don't think you'll have too much of an issue once you explain it was a very slight over-sight.

ginandmilk - We bought the car from a family owned car garage in Newark. Purchased September 2009 - Crashed Saturday.

Stoofa - I hope your correct. When and if they phone regarding the registered ownership I will expalin fully what happened..I have all receipt details and purchase imformation. I will admit i was in the wrong for not chasing the V5 up with DVLA.

Not quite true stoofa. They can also reject it if they can demonstrate that the information you witheld would have affected their decision to cover the risk. If they would have refused the risk had you answered truthfully the ombudsman is unlikely to disagree.

Ie if they only cover Group 20 cars with 5 years NCB and you pretend to have that to insure a Porsche.

explain the reason to why you said the car was in your name, they might charge you a different price as it is a rating factor, who is the car insurance with if you dont mind me asking ?

I know it would be amazingly stupid but whats stopping someone from photoshopping a letter to say they have 5 years NCB when they don't? I've only even been asked to request a letter and then forward it to my new insurer. I could easily change the 2 or 3 years to 5 or 7 or more and it look totally valid.

the threat that the company can alwasy ring and ask the insurer who issues it. They can and do do this if you loose your NCB.

NOt saying that they check everyone and you'd never get away with it. But its the threat of that happenning that keeps the system mostly honest.
