Hey all.
I bought a car on Sunday and used a 1 day insurance policy to cover it whilst I drove it home.
The car is taxed until end of November, but has no insurance.
I will insure it when my current car gets a renewal late in October on a money saving multicar policy.

The car is currently locked in the garage back home and is not being used.

What do I do in the meantime? I want to do it properly. The car needs to be laid up for one month.

Legally it should be insured, but seeing as it's in a garage you should be fine.

They would send you a fine etc... in the post though if you are unlucky.

****** paint in the rear this new rule. I have a car I have had to SORN simply because I transferred the insurance over to my mazda for the (extremely short) summer. Now I want to use it again, I have to transfer the insurance over, and then get a lift to the PO to re-tax it. Total pain, and as far as I can see, solves nothing.

The fine is £100, but as I do not have the new V5 yet I have to pay a £25 admin fee to SORN it.
I really have no idea what to do. Surely the car flags up on an insurance database that my car is not insured? Is there a grace period?

I could purchase laid up insurance but this is just a PITA, but I bet if I SORN it I will get the road tax back.

Don't know mate, Sorry.

All I know is when my car insurance ran out I thought I'd keep it off the road & just use my bike, I still had to SORN my motor even though it was taxed & on my private drive, ******* liberty if you ask me.

If you're feeling lucky, £100 might be worth risking (not that I'm encouraging breaking the [stupid as ****] law or anything). I had my car taxed/uninsured on my drive for a month while trying to sell it and never heard anything - but then you might get unlucky =/

if its only for 1 month, surely the cost of insurance for 1 month works out cheaper then sorning, claiming tax back (only full months remaining) leaving your other insurance to lapse, then reinsuring new car, and taxing?

I wonder how many bad ass lawbreakers have had their **** shut down thanks to this new law. I bet its in the tens of millions

I have just spoken to various people at the DLVA.
I do not need to SORN it for a few reasons:
1) A SORN takes 4 weeks to process - By the time they process it the car will be insured again.
2) After a few weeks you get a warning letter saying insure/tax it in 4 weeks or get a fine.
3) At this current time I cannot perform a SORN anyway as I the previous owner must send off the V5 and the records must be changed. So even if I should SORN it, I can't yet anyway.

As the car will be laid up for 5 weeks I will just leave it in my locked garage.

In my entirely non professional opinion, and based only on experience, It takes the DVLA up to a month or more to notice when you SORN a car, so i should imagine you'll be fine. When the rule was a bit newer, I left my car uninsured for 25 days, because it saved me £300 on insurance waiting until I'd had my licence 2 years, rather than 1 year 11 months!!

With multicar you should be able to start the policy now, and then when your other car's insurance finishes, you can add that (with discount) pro-rated rate.
