Basically I will be taking my test in march time and I am wondering about insurance, I could either be a second named driver with one of my parents as main driver or start my own NCB by insuring myself, insuring my self will be real exxpensive at like 1300 a year, I am not sure how much it would cost on my parents insurance, does anyone have any idea how much it would be and which option I should go for.
Thanks
Rich.

Well I looked at drivnig a 98 punto 1.2, best quote was 775 from admiral per year, 3rd party far and theft. That was wit my mum as a named driver. Without her it was 890, so you can get under a grand quite easily. Elephant were about the same, as were diamond.

Yes it will be best to insure yourself.

If you are the main user of a car, you should have the policy in your own name.

You will also build up NCB, which means you will be able to get better cars for reasonable insurance price later on :)

Let me help, you need to go here confused.com and do yourself a couple of quotes. One with yourself as the main driver on your own car, and then one with yourself as a named driver on a policy for your mum.

Building up your onw NCB is usually thought of the best thing to do, sometimes though a bus pass is much cheaper.

I'll leave aside my thoughts about the second method of insurance for another thread.

It is best to insure yourself in your own name, even if you are not going to be doing many miles. You may think to yourself its expensive, but everybody has to start somewhere.

I had a year and a half as a named driver on my nans car, and did some miles. When I got my own insurance in July 05 (albeit on a group 15 car) I was royally shafted. Then come renewal time it should come down in the region of £500.

<[TW]Fox mode>Confused.com is worthless. It would be better to go into the street, ask 50 people to write down the name of an insurance company, and a random figure, then draw them from a hat</[TW]Fox mode>

Instead, check out the sticky, and try as many insurance companies there directly, and you will find one that gives you a low quote.

For the Admiral group (Admiral, Bell, Diamond and Elephant), try adding an older female with no claims/convictions to the policy, it may bring it down. This doesn't always work with other companies, but you'll have to try it.
