I've not started a thread for ages but could do with some advice please

Background:
In february a car cut in front of me and braked (due to an obstruction ahead). This didn't give me sufficient time to brake and I ended up hitting the back of the other vehicle albeit at a minor speed.

We both agreed that it was no-ones fault and decided to leave it at that.

Upon returning home and booking the car into the garage I phoned my insurance company out of courtesy to let them know what had happened but stressing that neither party would be making a claim. I know this was unnecessary but thought it a wise idea at the time in case that other driver changed their mind and tried claming (we'd both exchanged details before we decided just to leave things).

I assumed that was the end of it however when my insurance renewal came through the post I was suprised it was so large (£600) and phoned up the IC. They told me there'd been a claim on my insurance, however on further checking this turned out not to be the case. What had happened was the the IC had set money aside in case there was a claim in the future and told me to phone back in 3 months to get the claim removed at which time my premium would drop to the £300 i'd expected to pay.

I went into the shop 3 months later and they told me sorry, but it should have been 4 months! A couple of weeks ago I popped back in only to be told sorry, it's 6 months you have to wait which takes me until august.

My problem is that I'm due to sell my car in a couple of weeks and I have the following questions;

1) Can i sell the car to the other person yet still stay onthe insurance for a month until the "claim" is removed?
2) If I cancel the insurance (which would mean i'm out of pocket by £150) then would I still have a claim against me when I next take out insurance? Or would my 5 years no claims be reinstated?

Thanks in advance for any replies :)

p.s I've put this in GD as opposed to motors as many of the people who own insurance don't visit the motors forum

1 - Yes
2 - No, you should have 5 years back in August even if you cancel now
3 - What? We all have car insurance thanks very much.

Thanks :)

I think you took 3 the wrong way - I was meaning that I thought I'd get more responses leaving it in GD - sorry

No you wouldn't, people who simply purchase insurance becuase they need to, IE the regular GD poster, has no idea how it works becuase it doesn't matter to them.

Motors contains people like Merlin - who is pretty much our resident insurance expert - and some of us others who are sad and boring and thus know a bit about insurance.
