I'm 20 yrs old. I'm a first time driver and the only named driver on my policy with my insurers.

My mum wants to drive the car as well once or twice a week during the week when I don't use the car.

My questions are:

1. Is it just a simple case of picking up the phone, and adding my mum as second driver without voiding my insurance or restarting a new policy with them?

2. Becuase I am a first time driver my premium is pretty high. Would adding my mum reduce my premium?

Thanks :)

1) Yes, its thats simple
2) Only if you are with an Admiral Group insurer.

What he said.

My girlfriend is younger, has been driving since 2006 and has two claims (one fault) within the last 6 months and still brings my insurance premium down. I expect adding your mum should make things a little cheaper.

How odd. My girlfriend is younger, also passed in 2006 but has no claims at all and she takes my insurance up by £100 :(

Can anyone explain to me why this is?

Civic Type-R £5500 - £950 fully comp - IG 17
ST220 £5000 - £980 fully comp - IG 16
MG ZS 180 £4500 - £1015 fully comp - IG 16

Why?!?!?

I see what you are saying, the insurance group on the MG ZS is lower yet the premium higher. I would imagine that insurance group is set nationally by a particular organisation, but then it's the individual insurance company that sets the premium and this will be calculated according to their own company claim statistics, so it will depend on how risky a given insurance company regards the MG ZS.

The MG ZS is a horrific chav car these days so I'd imagine the claim rate for them is through the roof, more so than the Civic Type R because a completely knackered ZS is yours from £1500.

I mean I know its the sake of only £75 but I was just quite shocked that the Civic Type R (the car I was thinking would rape me insurance wise) is accutally the cheapest!

Insurance is strange, I thought I would be raped on the S2000 (IG20) being 23 but I got awesome quotes, I guess its something to do with the fact there was only a small amount made (comparatively) and they don't represent a truckload of claims. Who knows! Its all a con anyway :D

I asked Admiral if I could add my mum and dad on my insurance. They said there would be a fee :(
My mum already has an automatic licence and my dad has been driving for over 30 years but I didn't bother getting a quote if they're just going to charge me to put them on. I'll wait for October when my insurance is up.

Im 19, driving for over a year, no claim, no crashes, no points or anything, clean. Now I did a quote on a Fiesta St and it came out £2750 that was the best quote :L on comparing insurance etc. Now my brother who just passed his test but he's 22 did a quote for the exact same car ST. And it came out as £970. How ridiculous is that? based on like 3 year age gap, and I've been driving a year longer. Oh he has 3 points as well. So ridiuclous they can discriminate like that.

It has nothing to do with discrimination. Its all about the risk you pose as a younger person. Data shows, you are far more likley to be involved in some sort of accident that an older person is. Hence the price difference.

In fact the s2k is one of the worst cars to insure so I guess you got lucky :p Insurance on an s2k for me is double that for my integra.

I understand that but nearly a 2 thousand pound jump :S:S:S?
Yet my brother has 3 points? and I have zero...

Never the less I'll still be the mug and pay that amount, so can't say much.
