My girlfriend had an accident two days ago, shes fine, her cars shafted but we havent heard a verdict back yet so we don't know all the details.

Now luckily I have a car to but as I joined the Army, I cancelled insurances and the like so I'm not insured. She needs a car to continue working as shes a homecare worker so not just a case of getting a bus to work.

So my issue is:

I need to insure my car with myself (as I know she can't be the only person insured on my car as I'm the registered keeper) and her but as we dont know all the details from the accident, not even an official "your cars written off" yet I'm not quite sure what to do. Shes off work until Boxing day but I doubt we'll hear anything by then.

I don't want to insure her on my car without any of the accident details as likely I'll get a good deal with one company and then once I update the policy it'll be much higher than if I'd started out with insuring with her accident on there.

What'd you do?

Why should he not tell them until its resolved? where she was at fault or not, she has still had an incident

regardless of fault they will need to know about it, depending on age, driving experience etc, you might find it makes very little difference.

If she is a named driver as well then her details wont be rated upon as much as the policyholder or major user of the vehicle.

I just did some hypothetical quotes. It works out at £1 a month more with the accident on there as a "write off" with the same company.

The problem I have though is anything I put down about the accident is all speculation and say I had an accident between now and amending it or if she did, then the insurance would be void due to false information. You never know if the other party will be injured or if something else will come up. Her car could not even be a write off, she's been told its a write off then told its largely cosmetic then told its a write off again so no-one knows, its all guess work.

I have to ring up to finish the quote anyway it seems so I'll ask then.

Ta people :)

do your quote with it as a total loss, take the top three companies and ring them. Explain what is currently happening with the claim. That way you have provided them with all the information you know and have let them decide how they want to use it.

If further down the line, they turn around and try and void the policy, then you will be able to direct them back to your policy registration call and they wont have a leg to stand on.

Also if it turns out the vehicle is not a total loss then call them back and update it.

Went with Elephant and mentioned it all, they have to put it down as a fault as its such a new incident but when/if it changes I just ring up and they change it but going by quotes with and without the accident with her at fault.. theres a £1 a month difference so it should be fine.

Thanks for the advices :)

Also be careful of fronting if you are in the army not using it and she is only a named driver.

Even if you DONT claim but you notify the insurers you can still get screwed over.

insurance companies require to be notified of any accidents, losses, theft, incidents or claims, regardless of fault.

so claim = you claim for your damage, incident = your car is involved you dont claim because of low cost etc. otherwise if you have TPFT you would only tell them of the non fault claims as you could not claim if you were at fault

so the OP doesnt have to tell them, but then leaves himself open if he does have another claim or someone claims off him.
