Bit of some noobish questions so forgive me.

Currently I am with directline insurance (comprehensive) and pay £550 a year. Only started driving last year although I did pass my test back in 2004.

They have quoted me a renewal of £680 - I always thought prices went down at renewal, not up!

So I have been looking at other insurance companies (via comparrison sites) and hastings direct have quoted me £500 fully comp including the 1 years no claims bonus i will have on my renewal date.

My question is do I buy from hastings before the start date (seems obvious) and before my renewal date do I phone directline up to cancel?

Will hastings expect me to of cancelled first before I buy their insurance?

Buy before the start date but ensure the start date is correct on the policy.

Phone directline to cancel and ask for your proof of NCD to be sent

Some companies, if they haven't heard from you to renew or cancel, bill your credit card by default as they assume you have renewed. Always confirm you have cancelled, just to be on the safe side.

When I renewed this year I bought my next years insurance 15 days before my old policy expired, double checking that my new policy started on the day my old policy expired. Then it's just a case of phoning your current insurer, telling them not to renew your policy and to send proof of NCB :).
