As a second car i have an old Mazda MX5, its great fun but doesnt get used much as i get the train to work and we have an Alfa Romeo Giulietta which usually gets used when we go out at weekends due to the extra space for the kids. So i'd contemplated selling it to use towards a house deposit.

My mums Audi TT recently needed a new engine so I added her to my policy for her to use the MX5 whilst her’s was being repaired. She’s enjoyed it (helped by the nice weather) as has my dad. He offered to buy it off me but keep me on the insurance. Win win for me!

He also mentioned me maybe buying it back if I decided that I wanted it back so I thought it may be better keeping it registered in my name so there aren’t excessive registered owners. Plus less faff.

He works abroad a lot and spends quite a bit of time in Spain so it’d probably be split fairly even usage wise. I’m just trying to work out how to sort the insurance. Do I just do it in my name with him as a named driver. With it being a fairly even split of time driving I’m not sure whats best.

Depends on if your old man doesn't mind you earning the NCD off it. If it's his car though, I'd probably let him insure it in his name, even if you're the registered keeper.

He did comment about me being able to earn the NCD. He has his own car anyway (although is driving and planning to leave it in Spain for 6 months)

He said he was struggling to insure it if it was registered in his name. I'll see if i can manage it.
