A few will remember my recent post about an MR2 Turbo. I got a good insurance quote on the car and so today I've taken time off work to insure and get the car (Yes, ACTUALLY GET THE CAR).

I telephoned Admiral this morning to swap the insurance over. Went through the usual details checking process and on to the vehicle. At the end he goes "Ah", "Because the group is so high, you'd have to be 21 to insure that vehicle". A stunned silence passes, and I actually say "What!?". "I used the online policy-change quote and got a response with £676 and some odd pence". The guy on the other was confused and asked if I had the quote reference number still. By chance, I did, and gave it to him. "Could I put you on hold for a while Mr. Keates?", "Sure" I reply.

Hold - time to think. Why is the problem occuring? Why when I'm an inch away from owning many a 19 year old's dream car those dreams are being smashed to pieces? Admiral need to pull through this one.

"Hello Mr. Keates?", "I've just spoken to our sales department, and they haven't a clue what's gone on. If I can take your telephone number we'll ring you back.". "Will that be today", I say, "It should be", he replies.

So here I am. Waiting. Waiting to know whether I can get insured, or whether Admiral were just playing with me. I know there's a way I can "force" the insurance on this using whatever's going on with their system, which is to cancel my current policy and immediately take out a new one - as the online system works fine with the car.

So that leads me to lose the little faith I have with insurance companies. They've been quite good to me in the past but they are playing with my mind on this one. Lift you up on a pedestal of hope, and then golf club you in to the distance.

Oh well, suppose I better go sit next to the phone.

Lets see some pics of it. :D

That quote is cheap, I paid 1k for mine at 20.
It was £676 extra, on top of my current policy - was an amendment. Original policy is a little over £1,000, so it works out as a new quote of around £1,700 @ 19. Who were you insured with, by the way?

This would have been her:

Under 21 and an import turbo. There is something certainly up with Admiral's quote system! I'm very tempted, an my extreme cost detriment, to cancel my current policy and just take out a new one. It feels like I've come too far to not get it.

Doesn't admirals online quote system say if it's an import from a non EU country the online quotes aren't valid?
You're correct, the new policy system does:

"If you are insuring an imported car that was originally manufactured for outside the EEC, e.g. an Asian or American import, we are unable to offer you an online quote."

It seems odd, however, that it goes on to allow you to select an imported MR2 Turbo, which could have only been originally manufactured for outside the EEC.

That's not really my quarrel though. What is, is that the system returned me an admendment quote, despite not mentioning anything about invalid import quotes.

What is interesting is that L0rdMike could have been driving around with an invalid insurance policy because of the oddness of the system

I'll try and shop around, but I can't see it getting any better.

Tbh, I feel like driving to Rolls-Royce in Crewe, and creating one of the biggest insurance claims in history :p

I just telephoned Sky Insurance. TPFT, they want £3,150. About £2,150 for a NA TPFT. I suppose it's a quote :p

Didn't want to tempt Comprehensive quotes, tbh!

Good luck getting insured, most companies want more than 1k+ for me at 19 with 1 NCB, pass pluss, driving 2 years, garaged in nice area etc etc, on a 1.6 fiesta D:
That's just bad luck. I wouldn't pay over £1,500 for <175hp

I mean, I'm 19, 0 NCB, fault claim, 18 months driving, parked on street in admittedly a pretty reasonable area and I pay a little over £1,000 comprehensive on a 113hp 1.8L 16v Xsara!

Admiral basically are:

Admiral (Duh!)
Bell
Diamond
elephant.co.uk
Gladiator Commercial
Confused.com
Inspop.com

Consumer facing, that is. A few more limited entities as well. Evidence of this is when I phoned them this morning, I got through to Richard at Diamond car insurance!
