Insurance - why do they make it so difficult!?

I've had to cancel and take out a new policy with the same company (Admiral) twice in less than a month now!

I renewed in April, and then moved house - to change address on the existing policy = an extra £30 per month, to cancel and start a new policy with the new address = £30 less per month, a total of £60 difference - why on earth could they not price match?

Then I've just had to add my partner to the policy, as she's starting driving lessons and wants to practice. £170 extra per month to add her. Taking out a new policy, and extra £17 per month! Again, unable to price match. So I have to go through all the faff of cancelling, making another payment, waiting for the refund, waiting for the policy documents, etc. etc.

Why on earth do they operate like this?:rolleyes:

Some sort of kickback from the underwriter for selling a new policy?

I like how all the numbers match, £30 more / £30 less and then £170 a month more / £17 less.

Not only that but it disrupts all your building of NCB as you keep adding extra months to it when you take out new 12 month policy when you change. I feel your pain, been through it myself. (probably not much of an issue if you're an oldie mind)

Yeah if I'd been 6 months or so through the policy then I might have reconsidered it, but since I'd only renewed less than a month ago, it was a no brainer really!

I did round them a bit, but yeah, particularly with the house move, it was within about 50p difference each way :p

Paying Admiral monthly is a really silly thing to do, their APR is terrible. Just why would you do it?

Loaning it at 30%+ is a really bad way to borrow it even if you need to :-/

Well the alternative is driving without insurance, or taking 4 times as long to get the train/bus/walking/biking to work :(

If you can, get a credit card with 0% purchases for 12 months and pay £100 per month. I'm sure that's a lot cheaper than what your currently paying now.

I wish I could =/

I think they gamble that you'll be too lazy to cancel and take out a new policy....so they think they can fleece you for whatever they want.

When I tried to change my address on a classic policy last year my insurance company wanted another 200% on the initial policy price....I went and got quotes from several companies who would do a year at the same price I had initially paid despite the address change....they wouldn't budge so I cancelled. Funnily enough I am now back with that company as they gave me the best quote this year.

Money, money and more money.

On my renewal, Tesco said they couldn't renew my insurance as I had changed car with a bigger engine. (I'm only a 2nd year driver).

They said, they can insure me though if I just fill in an application as a new customer...??

I'd love to know who thinks up this stuff. Couple of years ago midway through my policy i changed from a 1.8 petrol Laguna to a 2.0 diesel Vectra, got told that my company 'didn't insure that type of vehicle' I wasn't aware i'd bought some sort of high performance car!!!

My gf should me a piece in a magazine yesterday that had a woman who had her home insurance with natwest for the last 40 years, thinking she must be getting a nice bonus for being a loyal customer. It wasnt till she compared with her neighbour and found that she was paying £1050 compared to the neighbours £180 for a similar house!
Its a crazy world.

I had something many years back like this. I had a Nissan Primera and bought an Alfa GTV 3.0 V6. I had 5 months remaining on the policy and they happily swapped it over for what I considered a reasonable increase. I was 29 when I bought the GTV and my policy was due for renewal 2 months before I was 30.

When it came to renewal they refused saying they don't insure cars like that for under 30's?

But they had been for 5 months lol. They suggested I take it off the road for two months. Yeah right, a quick quote on Elephant and I was back on the road.

TBH I always find admiral to be cheapest and on the multicar policy I don't seem to have to go through the yearly haggling battle, its just cheaper than everyone else when the renewal comes.

Modern day highway men :D

You guys should try Adrian Flux, I'm a second year driver and last year I was with admiral till I changed car and they decided they wouldn't insure me. X plate zafira to a 57 plate grand picasso.

£1800 or something for the zafira with admiral, £1300 with tesco for the GP. Tesco renewed for £1150 this year so I just cancelled and Adrian Flux qouted me £675 :D
