It's time to insure my first car, best quote to date was £1626 with admiral. This is at 19, passed 4 months ago and I have pass plus.

Rang footman james when I got home from work and got it down to £1300 with my ClubGTI membership

I would have also been looking at another 200-300 on top for paying monthly where as with footman it only cost me £30 to pay with instalments.

So going from my experience and that of others on here classic cars are definatly the way to go.

A 1989 1.3 Golf!? Ouch, unlucky. That seems unbelievably expensive. When I was 20 I insured a evo 6 for £1200 (only 7 years ago).

Think you think you're younger than you really are :p

But it's a silly comparison anyway seeing as we all live in different places!

Third party fire and theft, fully comp is pointless on a low value car as well as not having no claims etc to protect.

£1300 is dirt cheap, I've got a mate whos a year younger than me that can't insure a 1 litre polo(6N) for less that 2k or so.

At least you're all going the right VW way, respect :)

Pointless edition: 7 years ago, my first car, £300 Polo, £350 insurance :( Thought that was bad then!

But them insuring you gives them the risk of you running into a £150k car or any variety of possible claims i.e. damages to the highway, other property etc.

Insurance is, however, a crazy game!

I know we can't compare evenly but for what it's worth, I thought insuring my Lexus ES300 '97 (first car) for $650 (400GBP) was a rip off. Plan was 3rd Party Fire and Theft with roadside assist.

What i mean is i cant believe that 7 years ago i could get insurance on an evo for less than this guy can on a 1.3 golf. Insurance has indeed gone mad.

Getting your own insurance is the way to go though and build up your NCB, good on you!
