Insurance write-off

Hi,

I currently run an old Fiesta. It was cheap to buy, cheap to insure and not a labour to drive. It cost about £900, including a needed timing belt change (it had 82k miles on the clock).

Some bint reversed into my side in a tank of a Volvo, causing pretty remarkable (for the speed of the accident) damage to the right rear wing. Took it to a garage who I know, who straight away said "It was bad and the panel will need replacing, take it to a body shop". They guesstimated about £500 - 600 of work, including parts, labour and respray. The car is a two door, and the quarter panel needed is big.

Anyway, said bint needs to put this through her insurance rather than pay in cash, which is fair enough. However, this means that the insurance company need to value it and see if it is within economic repair.... which I am very worried it won't be.

If the (cheap and indy) garage guesstimated the job at around £500 - 600 if it was done by his cheap body shop friend, the assessor the insurers will send will surely be from a more upmarket bodyshop, whose labour costs will be far more.

Am I right in thinking this?

Just wanting to know whether to start shopping around now!

Pretty annoyed; it mucks up my car upgrade plans when my NCB comes of age. Oh well.

Yeah I reckon they will write it off, its not just the cost of the repair, its the providing you with a courtesy car etc
