Insurers come through in the end

Just had a couple of profitable phone calls, the first of which was from my previous insurers, Tesco and the second of which was to my current insurers, Virgin. To cut a long story short, back in November my previous car was written off due to a drunken bint smashing into the back of my parked car and then driving off. I eventually managed to get the registration number of the car and gave it to my insurers and the police who said they would investigate. Last I had heard in December was that the woman was denying the incident ever occured and that she had smashed her car up elsewhere in a unrelated incident.

I'd since forgotten about this as I've not heard anything in 4 months, but today I get a phone call from Tesco advising me that the bint's insurers are admitting liability and as such are covering the claim :D That means that I'm now awaiting a cheque for £425 to cover the excess that was deducted from my payout

Having done a little jig, I then realised that this means when I renewed my insurance this month, it was with now incorrect details. I had described the incident as "Unknown third party hit me - claim made"; well that was no longer the case and should be "No claim made" as it has now been covered by the other parties insurers. I rang my new insurers, Virgin, with this info and they agreed to amend the policy in light of this. The net result being they are now going to refund me £160! :D

So yeah, both insurance companies have come up with the goods and I'm now £600 richer as the result :)

Congrats :) You're not £600 richer though - you've been refunded it. In an ideal world you could charge interest on that overpaid money.

Thanks :)

The way I look at it, half an hour ago I didn't have £600 on it's way to me. As a result of these 2 phone calls I now do. Therefore in my eyes I'm £600 richer, especially seeing as I never expected to get anything

As much as I'd like to blow it on an LCD TV or something like that, unfortunately £500 is going to have to go into my savings account. Reason being I "borrowed" from it recently due to some unforeseen bills (car related of course :p) and really need to pay it back as soon as. The remaining £100 is probably going to go towards a new gearbox that I need to purchase

Surely you still made a claim though. With my insurers it is "claims made in last 5 years regardless of fault".

I didn't make a claim through my insurers, it all went through the other party. Therefore it's now classed as "Unknown third party hit me - No claim made" I believe. I suppose it could be classed as something else, but whatever the technicalities are, my insurance company were happy to knock £160 from my insurance when I informed them of the change in circumstance :)

However it is going on an outstanding debt by the sounds of things...

Well, outstanding debt to myself I suppose :p

I try not to take out of my savings account, but if something comes up (as did earlier this month) and I need to utilise some of the capital in it, I try pay it back as soon as possible.
