It's that time of year where i'm shopping around for my insurance, made even worse by the fact my girlfriend has passed her test and will be added to the insurance.

I've used a few comparison sites like MSMarket & CTMarket but i'm curious about insurers that aren't included within these searches.

I know Direct Line and Aviva will only quote directly, are there any other big companies I should be considering that won't be included within a comparison site search?

Don't know if it's just me but not quoting through comparison sites just screams "We know we aren't competitive!" to me.

The last time that I tried both of those was about 2 years ago and as above, they were no-where near competitive. They may be better for some people but personally I wouldn't bother with them at all.

I always go through the comparison sites, i tried direct line and they were almost £300 more than a comparable quote on the comparison site.

not necessarily true.
For example Adrian Flux come cheap for a lot of people but they aren't included in comparison sites.

Cheapest quote I had on a comparison was £1000 or so.

Phoned Sky insurance and took a policy for £700 with zero excess and all optional extras included.

I suppose comparison sites are ok for old people who pay £200-£300.

I use comparison sites to see if anything cheap pops up, but it's usually the same Admiral/elephant/Bell as the cheapest. The price is usually the same going direct, and I've been with elephant for years and cba to change!

Comparison sites are geared towards the massive majority - standard cars for standard situations.
If you are driving a modified, highly niche car, or your circumstances are very unusual then they won't suit you.

I don't think age has much to do with it unless you are 17 and wanting to drive an Evo or something.

The ones who don't use comparison sites are doing so because they know they could never compete. I once rang 'More Than' and when I had the quote from them I told the guy on the phone I now know why they are called 'More Than!' :p

My insurance is due next month, just did a quote with Sky and they are about £100 cheaper that what came out of a comparison site!

Rubbish. MoreThan made me a quote via a comparison site that was cheaper than anyone else by some distance. Needless to say I bought my policy through them.

Reading peoples comments about comparison sites - it's almost as if everyone has differing results because people have different circumstances and that blanket statements aren't applicable!

From my experience, Aviva and Direct line (the two main "we arn't on comparison sites") have been double or triple the price of the comparison sites.

Specialist insurers like Adrian Flux are obviously different.

I always go direct but will still get a quote from a couple of comparison sites first, currently insuring 2 cars for less than £450 (for the two, not each) with no claims shared on both directly through AXA, the comparison sites quoted me that for 1 vehicle!

Have checked insurance with a few of the sites mentioned outside of the comparison sites, i've had quotes that are double to £300 more than my cheapest on a comparison site.

I can get £732 for the year using the comparison site, aviva quoted me £2.1k with the exact same details.

I am a bog standard driver with a bog standard car though, as some folks have mentioned, if you have something unique or modified, you might get a better quote from one of the other sites.

Lol, just tried AXA and firstly they apparently won't let me add additional drivers to my policy (keeps telling me I'm not allowed to add e.g. parent, friend, or any other categories on the additional driver form) and secondly gave me a quote for over £3000, more than four times what I'm paying. Don't think I'll try them again!
