Hi all,

We are now a two car family and as this is the first time having two cars I was surprised that my no claims bonus on my first car cannot be used on my second car, I have to insure the second car at 0 no claims, I find this stupid but have done it all the same. My questions are...

If I were to have an accident in the second car I assume it won't effect the no claims bonus on the first car will it?

Also when I come to renew my first car would I have to state the accident I had in the second car or only when I come to renew the second car?

I don't have a multi car policy at the moment as my current insurers do not do that, on renewal I will get a multi car policy, who does this work when both,y cars insurances end about 6 months apart?

I found that quite a few companies will take another policies NCD into account to some degree. But to answer your questions...

If you have an accident it will not affect the NCD on the other policy.

Yes do do have to declare the accident when renewing EITHER policy and this usually makes more of a difference than the NCD anyway.

Who or how? Most of the big name insurance companies offer multi-car policies now, Churchill, Aviva, Admiral, Directline,eSure, Axa etc.

As for the how you have a couple of options. When you first insurance ends start a new policy with a company that provides multi-car cover, and then add the second car to the policy when it's insurance expires. Or wait until the first car insurance expires, terminate the second car insurance and then add both cars to a new multi-car policy. Unfortunately you will probably have to pay extra admin charges either way.

Multicar may not be the best option anyway. Always best to thoroughly look around for the best deal on each car.

I have 3 policies all with Directline at the moment, simply because they are cheapest for me, with my current cars. I have no brand loyalty though, and would happily shift insurance company if I could save a tenner.

Some insurance companies are better than others when it comes to starting out on a second policy. For example, John Lewis insurance didn't take my other NCD into consideration when I took out a new policy with them, but at the end of the year, they gave me 4 years NCD instead of 1. That was great. Other companies may "mirror" your NCD onto the other policy. The only way to find out what any company can do though is to call them up and go through the process. None will do anything for you online.
