Just went out to check under the bonnet, and noticed a small hole in the intake tube below. Am I right in saying that it's not meant to be there?

Is that hole enough to cause a loss in power? Should I get it replaced under warranty?

Won't really matter as long as the hole is before the air filter unit rather than inbetween airfilter and throttle body. If you are that bothered - duct tape!

I don't think a small hole like that will affect performance.

What car is this btw ?

VW Golf Mk4 1.6 SE 1999.

Would it be better off if the hole wasn't there though?

I think it might be, not sure.

I think the throttle body is towards the top of the engine, is the airfilter the big black box?

My engine is so dirty!

The hole is after the air filter which is bad. A bit of duct tape will sort it out.

Should I tear a tiny piece of duct tape and patch up the hole, get a larger piece and cover it thoroughly or do both?

Get it replaced under waranty, duck tape as a temporary measure.

Alrite cheers, I'll definitely look into this.

Just a question though, how much performance do you guys reckon I am losing because of that hole? I know it's not a powerful car at all lol, but I'd like to know how much it's affecting it. :)

Just get a big bit and wrap it around the pipe. A smaller bit will probably fall off. Give the pipe a clean down before you stick the tape on it too, otherwise it will probably fall off.

Somebody told me it could damage my engine, as unfiltered air could get into the engine as it's running through the 'clean' side of the filter?

Use a big bit, with a small piece there's a risk of it being sucked through the hole and going into the engine.

Theoretically. Hence the duct tape as a temporary measure until you can get it replaced :)

It's an odd hole though. Very neat

Personally I'd just leave it as it is until you see the mechanic. They might give you some poor excuse about temporary fixing it yourself which would mean they won't fix it for you.
