Hi all,

I was wondering how much this car costs to run ie servicing, fuel etc. Would it be a viable car for doing 30 miles each way to work in? How reliable are they also?

Thanks

Try a search in this forum, im sure theres loads of info about them

They're not bad at all for longish journeys. I used mine a few times to commute about 35 miles each way and it was fine apart from the noise, but that's down to my exhaust choice.

They are quite reliable so long as they are serviced properly, a full compliment of service history is a must really. You can get upward of 30 MPG from them if you drive them sensibly, but why the hell you would do that is beyond me ;)

I run the detuned-lazy-**** version (B18C4) of the B18C6 in the integra. Runs about 20bhp less than a stock teg engine (although mine is slightly modded with a decat, manifold and intake).

In short - I am currently commuting 30 miles to my job a day and provided I relatively behave my self, I get around 300 miles to the tank plodding along at 4000rpm. Thats about £45 a week on fuel.

B18's in general CAN do 30-40mpg if you can keep off the loud pedal which you are probably not going to be able to do in the first 4 months of ownership.

I'll explain for the UK model as I'm not sure if the imports are the same.

Off the top of my head.

Servicing:

  • Oil change every 6K for 98-99/00 cars, post 00 every 9K.
  • Cambelt is every 8yrs/72K (do it earlier for peace of mind). Mine cost £200 all in from a specialist (included AUX belts).
  • 60K service is the £'s one.
  • Costs from a Honda dealership are quite high, go to a specialist who knows what they are doing and take pride in their work.
Reliabilty, mine has been faultless (touch wood) in the 5K I've put on it.
Fuelwise, I get ~250 miles to a £38/40 tank and I don't hang about :D

I do 20 miles each way to work in mine and it's fine, 30 should be do able with a decent stereo to keep you entertained.

Only downside I find is the paint is so soft and scratches easily.
Motorway driving isn't it's strong point, 4K at 70mph and a resonance coming from the cat heatshield doesn't help.

Any more Q's feel free to ask, the owners forum is good but you'll get moaned at for not searching.

Neil.

I used to average 35mpg in my JDM 98 spec.

Any of you on the teg forum? whats your user names?

Mines ITR_Nick, im the fool that crashed my lovely 98 spec JDM :(

I agree with what Neil has said, apart from Honda will do the cambelt for £200 under the Honda Happiness scheme

Thanks very much for all the advice, looks like a fairly economical car and also great fun at the same time. Now just need to find a decent one, is there anything in particular I should look out for apart from full service history essential? Also, would around 6k be enough to secure a decent one or do I need to up my budget a bit?

Ideally you'd want a stock car, main things to look out for:

  • Rust around arches.
  • Crunching from gearboxes at high revs (3rd to 4th) indicates syncros going = mega bucks to fix.
  • Bolsters on Recaro seats get worn, foam is replacable for £30 or so (pain in the backside to do).
  • Stone chips are common with the soft paint and low front end.
  • Suspension bushes wearing with age, can affect the handling.
  • Ask about the cars oil consumption, some use quite a bit some like mine don't use any.
  • Make sure the ABS light comes on when turning the ignition on, should go off after afew seconds.
  • Clutch should be nice and light, stiff lower down the pedal can mean it's on the way out.
  • VTEC point is 6K on a stock car, should be a noticable kick.
Drive a couple of cars to get a sense of what is a good example.
They squeek and rattle quite a bit, so don't be put off by that :p
Other than that, the usual bits such as accident damage, etc...

For 6K I'd say you're looking at a older 98 car with 70K, insurance isn't cheap as it's group 18 and easy to knick. Fitting an alarm if it doesn't have one is a must.

Neil.
