Intel 10th Gen Comet Lake thread

Ideal would be multiple companies involved and not just 2.
Oh, I dunno about that...
Look at RGB - Two standard connectors (3-pin 5v ARGB and 4-pin 12v RGB), yet many of the multiple manufacturers still insist on their own proprietary connectors, and the control softwares are still generally ***** even before they mess up your system... I'd hate to see the mess made by ten different chip makers with ten different socket types!

I don't think Intel are crazy enough to try to come up with their own bus type for graphics cards :p. I was talking more about competition than anything else though, like if there were only 2 car makers in the world.

It worked okay in the mid 90s when we had 4 CPU manufactures:

AMD
Intel
Cyrix
IDT

Great times.

Yeah but they all used the same socket and were mostly poor reverse engineered Intel clone cpus, Amd with their BS Pr rating system and Cyrix and those win chips were just garbage.

Yeah, I know, Just poking fun at the industry.
I would actually expect them to use different sockets still, though.

Slightly more seriously, although we have many different makers of stuff (PC components, cars, whatever), you rarely get anything truly innovative. Most of it is just incremental developments based on each others' designs. The amount of times I've seen "game changing" developments in, for example, mice and the end result is just another 2-button mouse that looks and does nothing different from dozens of other examples already on the market.

Absolutely but the more competition there is vying for your crown the more you have to innovate and push forward without ripping off your customers. In terms of electronics I feel like having more than 2 companies in the major divisions would definitely benefit us, the end consumers a lot.

Afternoon all,

Quick question really, going to do an intel build, mainly for gaming, browsing etc, etc, would the i5 comet lake, be sufficient, and future proof the the next few years ?
or do i pay that little bit extra and go with the i7 Comet lake.

Many thanks

i5-10600K(F) is good value if you ignore AMD Ryzen 3xxx
It will keep up with higher models in gaming, especially if slightly overclocked.
Ignore lower tier i5

None of Comet Lake are future proof. Next AMD Ryzen gen will dwarf them, and probably so will next? Intel desktop gen when they finally get Sunny Cove to run at high clocks.

Thank you alec,
Much appreciated, yes i do get that , that none of them are future proof, as long as it does the job for the next 3 yrs, i should be quite happy about that.

Yes there is always something better around the corner.

Thanks once again.

Wouldn't be so sure these days. Almost my entire work estate is AMD - Ryzen laptops HP 745 G6 machines connecting to X86 AMD Epyc servers. The desktop estate is intel but it won't be in 2 weeks time because power/space has just become a huge issue. I wouldn't be so sure in saying that the enterprise isn't buying AMD because I know a hell of a lot of people who are. Myself included, ive just pulled the trigger on 100 elitedesk 705 g5 minis and inside, you guessed it, Ryzen because in that power envelope and size there isn't a better option.

Also loads use mac? osx market share is <15%. Few businesses use macs.
We're a mid-sized employer, tied to Dell, and Dell don't provide AMD machines to business at all. ~6000 employees.

Also (sadly) AMD has a Cyrix-like reputation around here. The perception is that they suck :p
