Planning my next build and i was reading through the forums and i noted someone saying the haswell was a poor overclocker, is this true? If so should i try and go for a 4820?

the thing with haswell is that one person can have an excellent overclocker whereas other people can have bad ones. don't get me wrong, it is still a good product but make sure you're aware that nothing is guaranteed.
if you tell us what you want/ need, we'd be able to help you with your choices

On average they seem to do about 4.4ghz, but as everyone will say its all down to the silicone lottery, some will do worse, barely getting over stock and some will do much better 5ghz. Although the more recent batches seem to be worse than they were.
The Z97 is released any day now but Im not sure when the 4790k is released.

That's true of any processor, even ones renowned as being "good overclockers"; the problem with Haswell is that the odds of getting a poor clocker is significantly higher than has been the case with most recent Intel cores.

There have been a lot of poor clockers turning up here lately. With Z97 and the Haswell refresh with improved thermal paste just around the corner i would be hanging on for those. With any luck they will have lower temps and be better clockers.
