Looking for a mobo for my new i7 build.

Any suggestions ??

I intend to overclock, and want space for 6 DIMMS.

I was thinking about the Asus Rampage II Gene Intel x58, have any of you's used it ??

Thanks.

Wouldn't touch the Biostars with a barge pole atm. Way too many reports of dodgy ones flying about for my liking with unpredictable results. If you don't need triple cards or have need for those extra slots you can't go far wrong with the Gene (other than the price!).

reeally? cos I havent seen any at all, all reports I see say its one of most stable/reliable boards there is, and they clock well too

Then you need to spend more time reading up - the Biostars are highly variable and the BIOS is very restricted.

I'm not a big fan of ASUS, but I have to say that they seem to have the most consistent X58 boards at the moment. The Gigabyte UD5 and Extreme are good, the XFX can be had very cheaply if you look about. All are good.

I haven't tried any of the EVGAs, but they seem to be highly regarded.

I would go with them.

I've still got my EVGA 680i board and its great. :) Some people had issues with overclocking quads but mine has been happy with any Q6600 I've put into it. :)

No sorry Im not having it, just gone through a load of forums and done searches for Biostar and theyre getting much less problems than other bigger makes, I realise the bigger makes sell more so will get more reports of errors but Biostar are certainly looking pretty good to me and most others who heartedly recomend on the whole. If you know a particular place "filled" with reports of dead boards please enlighten

Not sure what is meant by restricted bios, its really easy to use anyone can overclock with it, I bet most people who use DFI boards have most of the crap on auto anyway lol.

Posted this in another thread but may as well post here.

Their is currently two issues I have come across with the Biostar X58:

  1. T-Power II software utility does not work once the system is overclocked.
  2. Ram Timings issues, at the moment my OCZ 3x2GB Platinums rated at 7-7-7-24 will not pass IntelBurnTest or Prime95 but will play games no problem with the latest official bios released in March.
Still needs work on as I cannot overclock the ram either, even with dropping the timings to 9-9-9-24.

They work totally stable at 8-8-8-24 @ 1600mhz - see below.
If Biostar can solve the above two problems it will be fantastic, in terms of perfomance vs price it is easily a match for any Asus, Gigabyte or DFI X58 motherboards even the Rampage / Classified waste of money boards.

NOTE: I've spoke to Stephen @ Biostar (Taiwan) They are going to run tests with the ram I am using to try & solve the timings problems.

Also, he said a new version of TPower II will appear on their website very soon which will work when system is overclocked.

I would go for the Gigabyte EX58-UD4P (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-157-GI) as; it’s apparently a good Overclocker. According To Custom PC (Reference Allowed?) someone got their Core i7 940 to 4.5GHz on air (Akasa Nero), at the Gigabyte Open Overclocking Championships UK.

PS. the Asus Rampage II Gene Intel x58 seems pretty fast and also a good overclocker
