Intel 14900k performance question

Got a question around the 14900k if anyone could advise please?
Motherboard is an Asus z790 Gaming WiFi II.
Have the latest Asus bios with latest microcode. And limits set by intel in place from the start.

When I idle or do real world tests. Cpu p Cores hit like 5.7 and occasionally 6ghz (very occasionally).

When running cinebench/occt (with no thermal throttling according to HWinfo and good temps). Using all thread test the Cores really back off. Jumping all over the place and not really seeing much in the way of 5.7. Usually in the 4ghz range.

I see that (can't remember the exact name) ring limit shows as yes in HWinfo. I think this is related to that I'm hitting the set max wattage draw ?

So when hitting the cpu with hard tasks is this normal.
I have a custom look with allot of cooling in the loop so my temps are good.

Just frustrating to see performance impacted and I'm more curious to know if this is normal?

What is your actual Cinebench score? That will tell you if the cpu is operating correctly. The 6ghz is only for boosting a single core, not all core load, and that's only the P-cores. The E-cores run at a lower frequency.

Since the BIOS updates etc are you running the Intel Extreme profile? That gives the most oomf to the chip within Intels guidelines.

Intels boost clocks are now opportunistic* and in combination with Intels new Windows optimisation* the system has been very carefully configured to miss even the most optimum of opportunities.

Yes it's set to intel extreme.

I've left the intel limit in bios in place as I understand this is what protects the cpu.

Is there a way I can output asus bios settings to txt to post here ?

Is there any better way out of windows or by removing anything that might be limiting performance at OS level ?
I have the power saving area set to performance.

I have the power saving area set to performance.

I very rarely use an Intel system now and when running windows it’s usually in a vm, but you can trim a lot of fat out of windows in general. I’d imagine there are a ton of how to optimisation guides.

Hmm, not sure honestly. The Intel profiles should be setting all the important things for you. Probably easier to just post your R23 score, along with some useful things from HWINFO like CPU package power, temperature, avergage core frequency, and see how off track you really are.

Do this ^^ then we can see why it is backing off, but realistically how often are you doing things as intensive as Cinebench?

True. However, this is more about making sure things are as they should be. Considering I have ample cooling and no thermal throttling is being reported in HWinfo. I just wanted to get my head around and be sure that without degrading the CPU, I'm getting what I've paid for.

I'll respond with results as suggested

So the multi core Cinebench 2024 score was 2196 pts.
multi core Cinebence 23 score is 37164 pts.

Here is the output of my BIOS settings...

Ahh, yeah, you're hitting the power limit, so I think that's why it is throttling.

From what I can see, your power limit is high enough that gaming should have no problem at all.

Most short-run workloads that rely on a few cores or a short burst, should also have no problem.

Long-run intensive workloads (e.g. the kind of stuff that takes several hours) would be significantly slower when capped at 253 watts.

So, I take it nothing is wrong but without allowing more Vcore juice it is what it is?

Are there any safe tweaks to gain anything that owners of the 14900k are doing do you know. Or is this the best it is going to get?

I think you have two choices, change the power limits (PL1/PL2) OR undervolt the CPU so that it can hit higher clocks within the limits.

But, from what I'm aware, if you fiddle with the settings manually it can disable the Intel fixes (at least, it does on some boards), so unless you have some desperate need for maximum performance in long-run intensive workloads where you're hammering the cores, I'd recommend that you leave it be.

is the correct way to under volt to turn off undervolt protection.
And use the Actual VRM core voltage to lower slowly ?

Anything else / is this correct?

And doing this will allow more range to he hit while using the same voltage intel limit voltage?
Seems this setting is to limit the voltage however not give more head room upto max voltage or am I miss understanding it?

IIRC some of the BIOS and microcode changes were to help prevent spikes in voltages that could be damaging to the CPU. I think that some of these types of spikes could only be seen and measured with a scope and not software.
I also have some recollection that BZ on YT seemed to suggest that if you manually adjust the default Intel settings then other some of those Intel fixes would no longer apply.

As typical, it had all remained fairly vague and somewhat speculative to me.

With my 14700k I just limited the power draw to the Intel limits and run with a negative 0.06v offset. It has been like that since bought.

Cpu core/cache current limit max: 400
Long duration package power limit: 253
Short " " " " : 253
IA CEP: Enabled
SA CEP: Enabled
Global core svid voltage: adaptive mode
Offset mode sign: -
Additional turbo mode cpu core voltage : auto
Offer voltage : 0.0500
Undervolt protection: disabled

This what i need to do to give this ago?
If I set the voltage limits this will lock any spiking ?
