techPowerUp have an article today about how Intel's new processors are going to be named.

Apparently the Socket 1366 pieces are going to be called Core i9, as well as the new 32nm Socket 1156 CPUs being called i5 and i7. Seems more confusing now than it was before, but at least it's laid out properly.

Not sure how reliable that is, but seems at least a bit plausible. Smacks of the 8800gtx->250gts debacle to me, though intel following in nvidias footsteps doesn't seem impossible.

One thing I've just thought of, though it doesn't make enormous sense. Assuming the 6 core are compatible with current x58 boards. One could buy a 920 d0 now, clock the hell out of it, then run the platform for two or three years. When multithreading has pulled itself together a bit more, sell on the no longer available D0 and buy the ludicrously expensive 6 core, as it wont be that much different in price to buying a new computer anyway. Perhaps this reasoning just means Im far too tired though.

Fud think the 6 core ones will work with some x58 boards, anyone know of a more reliable source this early on? link

I've also heard that X58 mobos will likely support i9 as it's now called with nothing but a BIOS upgrade, on these very forums. Not sure what their sources were.

The i9s are more than a core upgrade, they also feature better clock-for-clock performance in certain apps, just as the 65nm Core 2s do to the 45nm ones.

Well the situation where i7 was on two sockets was always gonna be a disaster. If they've changed it so that i5 and i7 are on a single socket and i9 takes over on the LGA1366 socket then that makes sense to me.

Although renaming the newer C2D and C2Q chips to i3 might seem a bit stupid, it will actually make more sense as a whole, especially for new buyers.

Fair enough with the naming but I still don't see the point of having a specific socket for the most powerful parts.

It just reeks of forced upgrading IMO, which I didn't like when AMD pulled a fast one with S940 and I certainly don't like now.

Not just forced upgrading though. Maintaining backwards compatibilty means more parts to worry about, dropping it simplifies the design process significantly. Amd putting a ddr2 and a ddr3 controller on the same chip is commendable, but one can't help wondering if doing so distracted them from other things.

Moving from 775 opened up ddr3 and dropped the fsb that was starting to really struggle with the new quads. That's a good thing in my books, the second part at least. Adding a different mainstream socket with integrated graphics on the chip is an absolute winner for many applications, just not for gaming. Whereas the high end i7 doesn't have graphics on the die, so can focus on raw speed.

It annoys customers, but it should allow for better products.

Hehe total madness, I thought ASUS were bad enough releasing a dozen variations of the same motherboard! :p

Chuck in a few revisons and steppings and newer updated chipsets and it won't be long before we have shed loads of incompatible hardware! :D

As always we will have to wait for things to unfold but I'm not impressed so far, deffo prefere the multi compatibility route which is what AM3 is looking to be and I am wondering why INTEL don't want people to mix a cheap processor with an expensive motherboard

Seems maybe they really don't like us overclockers maybe!

I am tempted to try out the new i9 cores next year, depend how much it will going to cost me (?) as I like the 6 cores with 12 threads on it, but dunno about the clock speed, will it be easy overclocking to 4.50Ghz ? Not sure about the i9 cores full load temperature with 6 cores/12 threads on it ? probably over 100C !

I'd have thought that with 2 extra cores, these i9 puppies would be harder to overclock than the current i7's, even taking into account the process shrinkage. We will probably see intel increase the stock clock on the quads, while introducing lower clocked 6 cores. Also bear in mind that the quads will move to the lower process node as well, so we might start seeing 4.5GHz+ overclocks on air being a no-brainer for the i7.

As a gamer, it's not clear to me that I'm going to need more than the 4 hyperthreaded cores of the i7 during the LGA1366 lifespan. (I'm only just moving up from an OCd E6600 to an i7 now, and there really aren't many games that were struggling on 2 cores.)

Personally I don't give a damn, When I decide to upgrade after Christmas all I am doing is getting one of OcUK bundles the i7 if it is still available then that will have to do me for a few years as long as it does'nt bork, I am only ever going to upgrade evey 5 years, its too expensive to try and keep up with all the new stuff I did that untill c2d and then I stopped, all I have upgraded is graphics (second hand) case (new) cpu cooler(second hand) they are not getting my money like befor am older and wiser to that..

I hope this is true I want to upgrade after christmas so if this is true I will be very happy :) Didn't really want to upgrade to an 'old' i7 lol :)
