gibbo, is this the one OcUK got to 4.xGhz by using the 125Mhz 'strap'?

Gibbo I've been having some problems with my pc recently and was looking to upgrade what would you recommend this or a I7 2600K? ;D

the usual question of what do you do with your PC comes to mind

gaming -> i5 2500k

lots of CPU intensive work -> 3820 or 2600k (not sure myself yet)

2700K now :)

while the 2600k is cheaper than the 2700k i'm always going to recommend it. i would never pay £21 (or even the £17 it is this week) for the same processor with a default setting changed, especially when that setting can be overridden so easily

*edit*
hmm... with the i7 2600k and an equivalent socket 1155 motherboard being only ~£30 more expensive, the i7 3820 is looking like its mighty good value for the people who would make use of it because of the upgrade path to the i7 3930K and 3960X

Didn't think this one had an unlocked multiplier?

If they brought out a K version of this chip I'd be very very tempted, especially considering the unlocked multipliers tend to add what like £30? to the price at most making it still a really good price for the performance.

but with board prices maybe not so much

The multiplier goes up to 43 I think from memory. That's 4.3ghz at 100bclk, increase the strap to 125mhz and your have a clock of 5.375ghz. As such, unlocked or not it has plenty of grunt and overclock potential especially given the strap can go much higher.

I'm going to look into it some more, very tempted.

It's payday on Wednesday and if this makes it into This week only dont know if I'd be able to control myself :D

when i was making the comparison i was actually using a worse motherboard in the i7 2600k spec. if i wanted to make it completely fair i'd use the asrock Z68 extreme 7 vs asrock X79 extreme 4 since the X79 board offers x16/x8/x8 SLI. that would put the price well in favour of the i7 3820

Seems odd for a quad-core?

Seems very odd. Some googling shows some people reporting 4 x 256KB, some reporting 6 x 256KB, and Intel having nothing on the i7-3820 product page relating to L2 cache.

I'm sure somewhere down the line someone mistakenly put 6 instead of 4 as prior to the 3820 all SB-E processors (albeit only two of them) have been hex-core.

EDIT: Another little point to add, OcUK and other e-tailers/reviewers are reporting 3.9Ghz Turbo Boost frequency yet Intel are claiming 3.8Ghz Turbo Boost frequency. Seems like another case of either Intel supplying wrong information or the wrong information being put up on their website.

Hi Andrew, sorry if this is a stupid question, so its ok to overclock these SB-E chips "the old fashioned way" by raising the BCLCK?

Only i thought that was a nono on the previous Sandy chips?

As i said sorry if its a dumb question but as you can see from my sig i am running slighlty older hardware, but i am looking to upgrade, probably to a skt 2011 set up soon, and these chips have got my interest.

Edit: - oh i see, just read a review and understand what these "straps" are now. Like an extra multiplier for the Bclck that gives a lot more scope.

Interesting.

Currently got my 3820 at 4.8ghz with 2ghz memory on an x79UD7

Fantastic CPU for overclocking and much more interesting to clock than an 1156 CPU.
