Intel 45nm "Penryn" Tape-Out

Penryn is like Conroe on steroids. And Conroe itself was already overdosed on them!

Can't believe their first tape out of it booted Windows  That's pretty amazing. Intel has some really great CPU development/visualisation software that allows them to do this.

Blimey they are ramping things up at the moment! This could bring one of the best overclockable cpus to the market for many years.

Just "faster". That's good I suppose :)

Late 2007 eh? Pretty quick really, considering they've also got the whole quad core thing going on. And the price cuts fairly soon plus extra cache options on the 6350 etc.

The article states that it's purely an optical shrink of the existing Core architecture, but when 45nm chips come out they'll likely have been redesigned to improve performance clock for clock as well (hopefully).

Jokester

I've never seen Intel just perform a shrink and release it without any logic tweaks - ever, since the 186.

History is on our side.

It means they've produced the "design" for the CPU and it is just waiting to be manufactured. It actually taped out in November but it has only just reached the public media. Over and above the tape out, they've also manufactured a few sample A0 stepping cores and have had them boot Windows. There is still months of work to do in ironing out the bugs but for the most part the hard work is done.

45nm intel ***!

the processor will become the new transistor in 2010 I belive :p

What we get in the CPU's now will be in the next processor chips lol
