Hi, I am connecting to a Netgear WNR834BV2 using a 5100AGN. The wireless mode set on the router is "270 mbps" out of the possible choices of 54,130 and 270.

I am using AES encryption. Latest drivers installed for the 5100agn and the latest firmware on the router too. What am I doing wrong?

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium , 64 bit
Wireless card: Intel 5100AGN
Antivirus: avast! Antivirus, Updated and Enabled

That card doesn't support 270mbps, at least not on 2.4GHz without enabling 40mhz mode which isn't really recommended. Set the router to 130mbps and use WPA2.

How do you know the 5100 is not capable of reaching 270mbps speeds? I assumed if it was an N capable card, which i'm pretty sure it is...it would hit 270mbps given the right settings.

270mbps on either 5GHz or 2.4GHz 40MHz mode, but that router doesn't support 5GHz and 40MHz isn't really allowed in the UK, so...

Okay cool, how about 130mbps though? I've definitely had that in the past..but for some reason i max out at 54mbps. Even when close to the router.

Thanks for your help so far.

Yeah, weird that it's reverting to wireless G. You should be connecting at N 130mbps, have you checked wireless card properties in device manager, just to be sure it hasn't defaulted to G or whatever? I'm struggling to find any info about your router on Google, are you sure it's the right model number?

Hi, sorry...i had one character missing from the model number..updated the original post too.

Netgear WNR834BV2

According to http://tools.meraki.com/stumbler, my router is set to 802.11n. I have checked wireless card properties under device manager and..N is enabled.

That reminds me, that yesterday, I was at a friends house with my laptop and it did connect at N speeds on his Netgear router. It is a different router model however.

I saw speeds between 150-270 at his house.

It's an alternative third-party firmware available for lots of different routers that adds extra functionality and fixes etc. It's a very powerful and widely-respected firmware, I use it myself as do many other members on this forum :)

Okay cool...i've just read that its possible for routers to be bricked when attempting to use 3rd party firmware. I'm fine with that, but if that happens, i will not have a backup router to use. So, i guess that will be last resort...

Here's an update on the situation. http://forums.techguy.org/networking/969691-intel-5100-agn-only-connecting.html

What I have established is that, the 5100 AGN is not the cause of the problem since I can connect at speeds higher than that at friends houses. So, maybe my router is a bit battered? It has been dropped a few times.Don't ask how.
