Hi guys.

It's time for an upgrade. I'm thinking about future-proofing. Could someone point me in the right direction? For now I would like to keep 980ti and monitor. I want to upgrade to 3080 and 4k monitor in the next few months. I really don't mind if it's Intel or AMD. I'm using my pc for gaming and general use like web browsing, Netflix, arguing on fb and watching cat memes.
Things that I will need: lots of usb A ports + usb c, Wifi 6 onboard + 2.5GB ethernet, m2 1GB gen 4, 32GB ram, AIO fancy CPU cooler. Brands I don't like: MSI, EVGA.
Budget? I don't want to spend 2k but if I will have to I wil do it. I don't want to spend too much on features I won't use. Generally - the cheaper the better. RGB? Yes! I'm keeping atx case, storage drives, psu. Front panel usb-c would be great to have.

My current setup:
Asus x99
Intel i7-5820K + Corsair H110i GT
16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz
980ti
Samsung 950 Pro 256GB M.2
27 inch 1440p 165hz
~1000w PSU

Personally I would just keep what you have and buy that new video card, a nice monitor plus a larger m.2 SSD!

5820k will be fine for another few years gaming at 4k IMO since you don't need to drive it at more than 60fps .

With already six core there I wouldn't really even consider anything not over 8 cores.
8 core simply wouldn't give much any improvement for future proofing compared to price of update.
12 core would be more like similar level of future proofing like that 6 core when you bought it.

GPU availability is miserable and same for prices unless you get very lucky.

And high refresh rate capable 4K monitor choise is very limited.
LG's 27" non-HDMI 2.1 27GN950 model has had bad availability since release in last fall and HDMI 2.1 updated 27GP950 announced in CES hasn't yet materialized in shops.
In 32" size there's nothing better than paper announcements.
Though Asus, Gigabyte and Viewsonic should have same AU Optronics panel using models released for summer.
Of course if size isn't problem there would be that 120Hz 48" LG OLED TV...

I would hold fire till the new sockets with DDR5 / PCIe 5.0 arrive and then make a decision. In the meantime the 5820K will be fine for 4K gaming since most the work is done by the GPU.

Thanks guys for stopping me from foolishly spending my money. I might just get 1TB m.2 drive and do a clean win10 install so I could feel my PC is fresh again.
