The specs on these beasts show that they have "Hardware Encryption: AES 256-Bit". But I can't find any further information on this on the net.

Do you chaps know whether these are self-encrypting drives (SED)? i.e. they always encrypt even when a password is not set, so enabling the encryption doesn't cause any performance drop at all much like the Crucial MX series drives.

Also is it compatible with bitlocker (Opal 2.0 and MS eDrive compatibility if I recall), or is the encryption activated by means of an ATA password in the BIOS?

Look like an ideal OS drive if the encryption works well.

Now that I have the drive, and for the benefit of others, the answer is NO - this SSD does not support the edrive standard and bitlocker will not use the hardware encryption of the drive, but instead will use software encryption.

The AES 256-bit encryption can only be used by setting an ATA password according to Intel. That's when I find out my Z370 Extreme4 board doesn't have this decades old function that should be baseline (unless I've missed something obvious). My mind is officially boggled.
