hi all just popped over to the bf3 free with intel processor thread, and noticed the great deals, what i was wandering how the i7 980 compares to a 2700k, and how well the 980 overclocks, the reason i ask is it would probably cost me as much to go 2700k as i would need a m/b too, but my current m/b supports the 980 i think.

The 980x is better with multithreaded applications, which would make sense. Anything else, they're neck and neck.
