With these results in hand, Intel wrests the overclocking crown back from AMD. The Opteron 144 lasted a long time as the leading best-kept-secret candidate for overclocking, but now lags far behind the Pentium D 805 - it's got only one CPU core, and runs 50 percent slower out of the gate.

Those with too much time on their hands and are ready to spend more time tweaking and tuning their systems may find themselves able to achieve stable operation at up to 4.3 GHz, assuming they can hit the sweet spot in terms of proper voltage level and adequate heat handling.

Erm, they didn't overclock the AMDs.

So AMD = still win.

Plus that chip was probably hand picked and only a select few ever get there - plus that clock is NOT stable.

Conroe is where Intel fight back, and thats an end.

As said earlier it was hardly a fair test. Oh and I havent seen anyone on here get above 4ghz let alone stable at 4 ghz.

Tom's is widely regarded as a joke site anyway by most of the community.

Conroe will be the only credible Intel choice when its eventually available.

The sooner all POS Prescott/Smithfield cpu's are destroyed, the better tbh.

All total rubbish, as usual for THG.

Even assuming you can get the 805 to 4.1Ghz stable on air cooling, that's only a 54% overclock. Quite why they're harping on about the Opteron 144 is beyond me as the 165 is hitting 3Ghz on air for many people, which is a 67% overclock. Even if you can't get 3Ghz out of it, 2.8Ghz seems to be easily achievable and still constitutes a 55% overclock, which still beats the 805.

At your friendly neighbourhood retailer you can pick up this secret weapon for pocket change - right now, for example, it's available at overclockers.co.uk for just £79.95, including VAT

Wonder why they specially name overclockers.co.uk and i noticed the price has risen slightly ;)

Oh granted it's a superb bit of kit for £80 but claiming that a 53% overclock wins Intel the crown over AMD when people are regularly achieving more than this with the Opty 165 is simply uninformed rubbish, which THG seems to excel at.

Debating if to get one meself tbh, what boost would it provide over a P4 3.4 prescott though if it was clocked at 3.33 mark

Maybe they based it on the opty 144 is its close too the price of this cpu.

but is it not about achieved speed?? not percentage overclock?? i'm getting 3.8 on mine and im more than happy at parting with 80quid for that...all on air btw

What sort of cooling are you using ? i have a Freezer 7 in would that do the job ok to achieve 3.6 gig ?

the cpu was hand picked, very few if any are getting speeds like that with similar setups.

The sooner all POS Prescott/Smithfield cpu's are destroyed, the better tbh.

I would argue against that, my p-d 930 at 4.6ghz with mem over 1ghz is no slouch i tell thee. :D

Thats Presler though, not quite the power sucking nuclear reactor that is the Smithfield core.
I stand by my previous statement. :p
