Am upgrading my motherboard to Z68 which will leave me with a spare MSI P67A GD65 (apologies if I've got the no.s the wrong way round - do not have the exact details in front of me:o) ; which I've decided to donate to my son.

Currently son is running s939 x3800 @ slightly o/clocked to 2.00/2.4 -( again not sure exactly :o )with a 5700 gpu.

Was thinking of adding the celeron cpu mentioned to the board + 4gb of ddr3 (which I have spare) and I believe that , even tho the new cpu will not clock, this will be MUCH quicker than his existing rig.

Am I right? - Alternatives ?

BTW - his 'complaint' is that his current set up cannot cope with champ manager. (current system has'only' one gig of ram and I've already found that to increase the ram will involve 'new' modules and a cost in excess of the new cpu !)

Is the 5700 a PCI-E GFX card? If not you'll need a new GFX card as well unless your P67 board has vga outputs allowing you to use the built in GFX of the G540

Ah ok, yep should run great. I did a similar upgrade for my dad. He also had a 939 3800+

Built him a G530 based machine with 4gb cheapo RAM, got the cheapest bgrade board i could. Gave him an 8800GTS 320 i had lying around and its 10x better than the system he had. It plays the COD games he likes no problems.

I used to run a celeron G530 for a few before Ivybridge came around, and it performed rather well. The only thing it would really struggle on was BF3 with the setting turned up, but great CPU otherwise.

lol i dont know, never looked into CPU's properly, i thought celerons like atoms and semprons and athlon was like a pentium..

okay then, so if a celeron is better than a athlon does that mean a pentium is? i had a pentium 4 3ghz in an old dell and it wasnt bad, only experienced a semprom from AMD so far.

the celerons are pentiums with less 1mb l3 cache, they both have max memory speed of ddr3 1066, g8** series has 1333. The celeron g540 i bought for my gdad is a cracking chip paired it with an m-itx h61 and an ssd. Absolute beast coming from his old socket 939 3500+

I built a mate a cheap gaming rig round one of these - his budget was 200 inc GPU

In the end went for basic mobo, 6870 Vaporx, 8gb DDR3....

Works a treat, and that was coming from a 2.4ghz core 2 quad!

GPU prob made the biggest diff, but still an amazing jump for 200 quid.. and that CPU is a total bargain.
