The is trouble i want to run SLI and use a Intel Core Duo 2.40GHz. I know i can do this but it seems that the only Motherboards out there cost around £250 - £170 mark, which is out of my budget. Ideally i only want to spend £120.00 inc VAT.

I want to run one of these cards (BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB), but wait for the price to go down before i get my second.

The only Motherboards i can find are these:

I'm surprised at the lack of boards there are to fit my needs. Has anybody got any suggestions on alternative motherboards which fit my budget? I did manage to find a cheap board which would run the components i require. However, this board is Asustek S775 nForce4 SLI ATX and it is really old now, or would this board be ok? Will there be any more up to date Motherboards coming out soon which will be a bit more cost effective?

Any help would be good. I’m not a computer wiz and have just put this upgrade together by reading information. Please be lame with terminology. lol

Cheers

If you want official SLI support it has to be an nVidia chipset board.
There should be 650i SLI boards coming out in the new year & they should be cheaper.

Yes i do want a NVIDIA chipset.

I have found this board. Will this work with my DDR2 667mhz RAM or should i wait???

I'd wait, especially if you are going to overclock your cpu. Those boards overclock dreadfully. If you are not going to overclock that board would suit you fine.

Wasted on SLI tho...

What res you playing at? Because one GTS will be fine for under 1600x1200, and a GTX will do up to like 1920x1200 :)

I will be playing at 1280 x 1240. I think i will wait for the new Nvidia chips to come out. However, i really do want to know when somthing in my price range will come out (£120).

No point waiting months i want to build this PC by January.

Cheers Guys for the response.

waaa! don't get that old hat! That chipset was pretty much scrapped all together. Much better getting a 680i chipset :)

I may in the future get a larger monitor and play at higher rez. At the moment have a monitor which plays at 1280 x 1240. This whole new system is for the future really and i want it to last me 2 years at least.

I think i will wait for the new 680i chipset. Does any1 know how much they will cost and when they arrive in the UK?

Thanks again for all th infomation guys!

uuum, they're out right now. At least the reference mobos are. ASUS' offering will be out by the end of the week hopefully, and the rest will follow around christmas/new year. See here for prices :)

Yes but most of those boards dont support duo and sli and the one which do are £180. I only want to spend £140 at max

So you want SLi, which is £800 yet spend £140 on the 2nd most important part?

Get a 8800GTX, get a Asus P5B, be done with it.

If you then NEED SLi, which I doubt. then you can grab a decent cheaper SLI board and another 8800GTX.

Job done.

Very good point! I'm glad that somebody here has got their head screwed on! lol

I have to wait until January to build, so if i cant see anything out by then that will run SLI the be it i will get the Asus P5B.

I think I read somewhere that the 8800's need 16x PCIe channels to run? If that is correct then the P5NSLi won't do you as it splits the 16x channel down to 2 8x channels in SLI mode.

I've got a P5NSLi with an overclocked E6600 (3.2GHz) which kind of blows the myth that these don't overclock. They don't overclock as well as some other boards, but they will give a nice 25% overclock. I've put 2 7900GTO's in there and I get 10,102 in 3DMark 06 which I'm quite happy with.

I know that loads of people will jump in and shout that I could have done that with one 8800 or something, but these are relatively small (so they fit in my V600 case), and when I sell them I'll lose about £30 on the motherboard and £50 on each graphics card. If I bought an 8800 I'd probably lose £200 on that when I sold it.
