Im using an opteron 180 with a very mild overclock to 2.5ghz. As the E2160 is so cheap Im thinking of getting one and clocking to around 3ghz. All I need is a new board and Ram to go with it so reckon about 200 pounds would cover it.

My question is, would this be worth it? Its used heavily for gaming and the graphics card I would be using is an 8800GTS 512mb. Would I see any noticeable frame rate differences in the real world?

Absolutely IMO, and you can do the upgrade for less than £200.

Yes it's worth it.

I've had a highly clocked opteron 165... 3ghz on a DFI SLI-DR.

Upgraded to an e6600 @ 3ghz (very similar to an e2160 i have also used at the same speed) and it decimated the AMD in encoding (massively) and gaming (to a slightly lesser extent).

I remember the first test was to encode a DVD which i timed with each rig. With the opty it took nearly 30mins but with the C2D it did it in just over 10 minutes.

Believe me - i loved my Opteron but as soon as i saw that i knew it had been well and truly OWNED.
