Ok this may sound daft! but are we talking a massive massive differance?
Cause the way i look at it, intels chip is over double the cost!

I could probably build a new rig for 3rd cost. Using AMD

What you guys reckon?

I was thinking maybe build on the cheap and then maybe leave it 18 months then go conroe?

Edit. Saying i went the AMD route for now:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz (Socket AM2) vs AMD Athlon 64 4000+
which way to go?

you won't notice much difference between the 3800 and the 4000, only difference is the cache size, which might give you an extra 2fps in some games, it realy doesn't affect much. downside of ignoreing conroe for now and going with the cheap A64s is that they are only single core. Might not matter, probably wont matter at all, but something to bear in mind.

Sure the E6600 is expensive, but its a match for the Athlon FX62. The entry level E6300 is a lot cheaper, and should be able to match the Athlon64 4000+ in single threaded applications, and of course being dual core it will thrive on multithreaded apps.

(Well, the AMD would be faster in a few applications, but in the majority the 6300 would be faster)

im in the same position, conroe is too expensive for me, id pick up a athlon 64 skt am2, not much difference if you game and it will be much less cost, then see what amd bring out in skt am2 in the future, by the time you want to upgrade to conroe then amd might have a better chip out.

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 vs AMD Athlon 64 4000+ ?

every e6600 previews/benchmarks have overall bested/matched amds fx62 (700quid+ cpu)...

E6600 might be 250 quid but then it will last a lot longer :)

I recall reading the extra cache makes up for having a 512k cache cpu with 200mhz more speed.

I have the AM2 3800 atm clocked at 2.52 gig on stock cooler with no issues ill probs up it abit, idles around 34c.

Depends really on whether you will be needing new mobo/ram as well.

On pure cpu terms, there's no way I'd buy anything other than a Conroe chip. But, if you have the option to get a 4000+ without needing a new mobo and/or RAM, that could be the better option.
