i have a dell xps 720 and seeing that there's no overclocking available is it worth me upgrading from my q6600 to the E8400

if u cant overclock then get the faster cpu. But if u can then the quad is the way forward

That would be silly, if you already have a Q6600 there is no point getting an E8400.

It might be a little faster in games for now but if/when quads are used you'd be in the same situation again. Waste of time, stick with the Q6600!

I thought Dell had stopped all that locked BIOS nonsense with the XPS line....???

When i had an Dell 8300 back in '03 with a 2.4ghz P4 it was so frustrating not being able to overclock a processor that could easily have made it past the 3ghz level....

That's almost definitely a waste of money. The dual will be a little faster in most games but otherwise the quad will be way quicker, and will gain an advantage in future games.
