Hello,

I am aware after reading lots of threads on here that the q6000 is better suited to labour intense applications and the E8400 is better for gaming. As I originally thought I was going for the Q6600 I read a lot about it and to get a GO version for overclocking. Now I am thinking from advice within the forums that the E8400 is a better choice for gaming but I have not seen a E8400 with go stepping etc. Can some one point me in the right direction of which version of this chip I should be looking out for?

There is only one E8400 stepping, and therefore they all have to have the same one.

Ah i see they all have this new stepping as standard so I do not need to worry about where i buy one from. Thanks for clearing that up you have been very helpful.

As CPUs are produced they are assigned steppings, that are a little like revisions. The Q6600s G0 stepping is a newer production version than the B3 it replaced, reputed to have generally lower power consumption (as manufacturing processes are refined power consumption, voltage required, tends to lower).

The E8400 is a completely different generation and manufacturing process to the Q6600 (45nm v 65nm), so steppings of one have absolutely no relation to the other.

This is not true if you were talking of an E6850 and Q6600, as they are part of the same "Conroe 65nm" generation (or "manufacturing process") and can both have G0 steppings.

E8400 may have a "G0 stepping" at some stage, I'm not sure how Intel comes up with the letters but even if it does, it'll have no relation to the G0 stepping on a Q6600.
