intel core 2 duo or AMD Phenom II

Deffo the AMD....

Much faster CPU and a Quad core... newer socket etc

*this*

The Phenom II's are pretty much on a par with Core 2's price and performance, but you get the upgrade path. A lot of the reviews also put the Phenom's slightly above Core 2's purely on gaming.

If I was buying now, then thats what I'd pick. If I could wait a few months i'd see how the Core i5's are.

and would the C2D support DDR3 memory?

Yes with the right board, something like the Asus P5Q3, but if you want DDR3 I'd suggest you go Quad not Dual. Also, avoid the Core2 Duo E7xxx-series and Core2 Quad Q8xxx-series if you think you might ever install Windows 7 as they don't have hardware virtualisation and therefore don't support XP-mode, not that you'll need it but just in case... All AMD's support it, so for you I'd suggest a PhenomII X4 940 Black Edition quad core at 3.0GHz and find an AM3 board you like.

Forget this 'dead socket' crap, how many people with a 4 year old computer do you know that keep their old board and fit a new CPU? That's right, non. They go out and buy a complete system. So, if a 775 system meets your spec & price requirements then get it if you want. I'm building a media center around a Core2 Quad Q9550S cpu and a socket 775 Asus P5Q3 motherboard. It'll be more expensive and only perform similarly to the Phenom setup I suggest, but at 65W vs 125W my price premium will give me a much cooler quieter system which is what I want for a HTPC.

AMD pretty much on par with hte LGA775 core 2...... whatever :P

LGA775/AM3 is all you need for gaming anyway unless you love to see crazy frame rates ;)

i went AMD/ATI not so long ago and i was blown away, performance is fantastic and i will only ever go AMD/ATI for games now.
Oh and i discovered if you add the name intel and nvidia to the box names the price goes up by 100% with little to no performance increase :P

a phenom II 940 won't fit in a am3 board, because the 940 is a am2+

Damn, I never realised that, so with that CPU he'd have to use DDR2, whereas with an Intel he could use DDR2 or 3 depending on the choice of board. It's still a good CPU for the money in my opinion.

its because the 940 as 940pins where am3 socket as 938pins also the memory controller is built-in to the cpu.. intel C2D have the memory controller on the motherboard.

AMD, i've been converted to AMD due to the minimal difference between the i7 in performance for gaming and the value for money factor.

I'll also be using ATI cards over Nvidia too, just a cheaper solution with little difference.

my vote is for AMD too, they are inexpensive than Intel, gives you better or equal performance in games and normal tasks too....

Amd definently you could drop the quad you listed to a 550 dual or 720 tri if you want to save some money, but if your buying new I think your money is better spent with amd.
