Hi al,

Im looking to upgrade my home PC from a AMD FX55 to one of these bad boys

"Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Edition QX9650 "LGA775 Yorkfield" 3.00GHz (1333FSB)"

Now I just need some DDR3 ram and a motherboard?

Any recommendations? Should I preorder one of the new Asus x48s?

I doubt I will be overclocking it, I just want to future proof it and make sure it preforms well for the next 3 years.

Thanks

The thing with newly released hardware is often support/drivers. I've just now bought a P35 board, best i could buy, could've easily afforded any other board but fact is the P35 is solid. Haven't read much about the X48, but i'd expect prices to be absurd and i don't see any issue with the X38.

For example, the Asus P5E (i'm a big Asus fan), is like £130, only reason i didn't go for it is that good DDR3 RAM is almost is the price of a gfx card lol.

As to future proofing, the X38 isn't that old, look at the P35, it's still a favourite after a long time out. My current P5GD2 Deluxe has some chip i can't ever remember seeing and is 2 years old, was mid-high range then, and can still run anything ok except the C2D's.

I know you said you don't want to be overclocking but are you sure you wouldn't rather save £500 on the CPU and just buy a Q6600. You can overclock this to 3.2Ghz with just a few simple changes in the BIOS. Overlcoking isn't the dark art it used to be and there are plenty of members here to guide you through.

There is of course DDR3 which really, afaik, doesn't have any major advantage over DDR2.

Just my opinion.
