Intel Core i5 750 - Quick Question

Quick question: Can I use SpeedStep or similar, which will allow the CPU to downclock when it is idle/not under much load, when I've overclocked the CPU?

I tried an OC at 3Ghz, which worked fine but it was at 3 the whole time. ATM it will go down to 1.1Ghz to save power/heat.

Any help much appreciated. I have this chip a long time now, so am thinking I should really give OC'ing a proper go! (But I'd rather not if I can't use speedstep and let the CPU slow down when idle)
 
if you're oc is stable then just turn speedstep on and see what happens. i've read that occasionally speedstep can cause instability on an overclock, but as you're only running a conservative oc i'd bet my hat you'll be fine. i've had my i5 750 @ 3.6 and with speedstep/turbo on and never had any problems
 
no real reason other than i didn't really need the extra speed for the eatra heat being generated. i'm quite happy with the performance/heat i get from a 3.2 oc. i think i'll wait till my cpu starts to struggle in games etc before i whack it back up. may aim for 3.8/4.0 stable at a later date
 
Yeah, that's something I want to balance as I don't like a noisy PC if I can help it.

I'll aim for 3/3.2 and see what the temps are like!
 
have a blast @ 3.2, it should be pretty easily achieved, when you get it stable, you can try edging your vcore back a notch or 2 to help with temps/noise
 
Will do, one last question. There seems to be loads of info on SB i5s, but whats the max vcore we can use? Obviously I aim to be way off the limits!
 
Okay, I went a bit crazy. On 3.8Ghz atm!

Been running PRIME95 for 20 mins or so now, seems stable. Hot mind :P Probably won't keep it this high but nice to know it can.
 
An Asaka Venom (got it cheap :P have been on stock for a while so been waiting to see what it can do).

Temps were around 80 on PRIME, too high for me tbh. But it is stable.
 
Well, if you go to the watercooling forum there will be plenty of people telling you closed loop systems are rubbish but i have been pretty happy with it so far. Right now at that vcore and 3.7 idles are about 38-42 and the room is hot! Like 26 :D. Under load still to see it going past 68 so yes - pretty happy with it. Oh yes, i have changed the fans to apaches and they run at 400 -500rpm - virtually silent.

Yeah I've seen that a lot. I think they just miss it when only those with time and money could get water cooling :P I had an H50 a while back (had two actually, first on a Q9900 in a mini-ITX case!). I liked it tbh, was too noisey for me though and I needed money so I sold it and stuck with stock for ages! Would buy similar again no doubt, with extra/replacement fans of course. I bet at 400-500 RPM you can't hear them at all :P
They keep it that cool at those speeds? How can it not be good!?
 
Yes, the only reason i'm considering water is because while i can't hear the h70, the 580 more than makes up for it :(. 1.2 is good really, try running prime overnight and see how it does.
 
Yeah, GPUs make so much noise! I'd love to be able to afford a nice W/C setup - overspecced such that I can run it all on low RPM fans :)

Yeah unfortunately I have to sleep in here and it's not that quiet. But I could run it during the day tomorrow while I'm at Uni. Weird question ,is there some way I can log how the PC is on for? I mean if I get back and its off, it won't tell me much about how long it lasted! (or is that not important?)
 
Well if it is too low, it will probably be fairly quick. But it can vary really. I think my 3.8 stopped after 16 hours, yet still i used to have it set @ 3.8 for quite some time and never had any problems, even though it was not technically stable.
